1889 O Morgan, elliptical O and VAM-1A question.

Below are two reverse images of 1889 O Morgan dollars. The first being the regular O and the second having the elliptical O. Question, how common are the elliptical O's and which of two type O mint dollars have the VAM-1A with the letter E below the eagles tail. Of course neither of mine have the VAM-1A but I would like to know how rare they are. Thanks for anything you can add. image

I don't think the oval O mint mark is too common, since it's a Top 100 coin (or is it Hot 50?). The clashed E reverse coin will have the normal O mint mark, you should also see some clashing on the reverse in typical places. I've found that the doubled date coin has similar clashing to the VAM 1A so if I buy one and don't find a clashed E, I look for the doubled date.

The Oval-O is a better VAM... keep looking for more because there's definately no shame in having more than one.
    When in doubt, don't.

Is the oval (elliptical) O a VAM by itself or does it have to have the clash to be the VAM-1A ? image

Yes, the oval O is a VAM by itself. I can't recall, since I haven't any but if it's like the 1888-O oval O then there is likely several oval O varieties, but don't quote me on that fact.

There is more than one Oval O variety, but the E-clash coin is specifically VAM 1A.
    When in doubt, don't.
