    Doug,
Sometimes I wonder why ON A MAJOR RARE COIN, the seller and the buyer play games. The seller's reserve is a minimum of $7k based on the current market for a PCGS68DCAM. Why not start the bidding at the reserve amount. Any buyer of this coin should know the market value and bid accordingly. The buyer, unless he has already put in a max bid of at least $7k has no shot at winning the coin. I'm not quite sure how the EBAY auction works, but my guess is that the top buyer bid right now is the $1,025. This coin will either sell for $7k or more OR it will not make the reserve IMHO. Good luck to anyone on these boards who is going after it. PCGS & NGC population is raising in the last year, which was to be expected with the ongoing publicity, BUT I'm still convinced there are less than 200 in existance today. Steveimage

Interesting late activity on this coin bid up to $7k, BUT the seller wanted more. Sort of confirms what I've said before. The current market for a PCGS PR68DCAM is in the $7k to $8k range and the current market for a PCGS PR69DCAM is in the $11k to $15k range. Wish the pricing guides like CU and CW trends would publish it. Good luck next time to board members trying to get this rarity. Steveimage

Steve, there is a PR69DC on EBay right now too, with a BIN on it.

Thanks Doug & Charlie, The PR69DCAM is a buy it now at $13,750. The PR68DCAM is at $4,550 with over a week to go. These two should confirm my market value estimates above. Steveimage

Another interesting point on the PR69DCAM. The dealer has a starting bid of $12,950 with the BIN of $13,750. Hense a $800 spread. I like his approach, although it probably won't generate a sale. Point is, if you want his PR69DCAM you will have to pay the market value. As a long term investment, it is probably a good deal at under $14k. JMHO. Steveimage

Heritage has a 67DC in inventory for $8,500.

Your market estimates for the coin MAY be correct, but the first EBAY coin for $7000, did not sell. It is safe to say it is worth $7000. That was the highest bid. And Heritage's 67 will not sell. Who would pay $8500 for a 67? Furthermore, if there are 200+ of these, and most are in great shape, how could you pay over $7000 for a coin which may have 50 or more in that kind of condition?

True, the reserve was higher than $7k. But the last bid was for $7k with an other underbidder at $6,900.

It is safe to say it is worth $7000. That was the highest bid. And Heritage's 67 will not sell.

I agree with you that the current market for a PCGS PR67DCAM is NOT at the $8.5 level.

People pay a given price for a coin if (1) that is the market value and (2) they want that coin for their collection. I believe there are "thousands" of Lincoln cent collectors out there. If only 1,000 of them collect Lincoln cent proof coins, or even just Lincoln cent proof MEMORIAL coins, they need THIS coin to have a COMPLETE collection. I believe there are no more than 200 in existence. Supply and Demand. You do the math. Steveimage

Notwithstanding the coin in play, I would have a hard time buying anything on EBay for $7k!

I can't help it. The 1990 no S Lincoln proof cent intreges me! With the expected rise in the slabbed population to over 60, these coins are showing up with more regularity in auctions and on EBAY. My "feel" is that people who had them in proof sets are now making the wise decision to get them graded and slabbed to protect their value. (PCGS & NGC guarantee the grade). Anyway, the above linked example with NO reserve is now at $5,276 with 8 bidders. This one closes at 6:47am PST on Tuesday morning. The coin that did not sell at $7k last week has been relisted with NO reserve this time. Item is 3956170184. (Maybe someone can post a link on this thread) That example is at $5,100 now with 5 bids. This second one closes at 7 pm PST on Monday evening.

So, we have TWO of these PCGS PR68DCAM Lincoln's up for bid on EBAY this weekend with no reserve! The CU price guide has now listed this coin in this grade at $8,500 retail. I doubt either of these examples will get that high, but it will be interesting to see how many people and how high they might be willing to go to get this KEY Lincoln cent memorial proof. Good luck to anyone here who is going after it. Steveimage

Well, the doubleheader auctions of PCGS PR68DCAM 1990 Lincoln cent "no s" proofs is over. The Monday night closing on EBAY of #3956170184 went to a dealer for $5,651. The Tuesday morning closing of #3955430178 went to a collector (I think a board member here) for $5,577. Certainly shows the prior $7k+ value is in jeopardy, at least short term. OK Lloyd, you can give me your take on it if you'd like to. I will still believe that there are less than 200 of these in existence until I see over 150 in slabs. JMHO. Steveimage

The saga of the 1990 no S Lincoln proof cent continues. Nobody wants one now! At least not at the $5,600 level being offered for a PR68DCAM on Ebay. Or the $6,800 level at Heritage. Or the $7,900 BIN level on EBAY. Here is a coin that people were fighting for at the $7k+ level just a few weeks ago. I would have thought that with the new ones coming on the market recently that registry set collectors of modern proof cents would be rushing to get one. 64 of them are now listed for PCGS & NGC. I suspect ANACS may have gotten one or two into their slab in the last year, but anyway you look at it, this is a truly rare coin. Of course, just a year ago this was a $4k coin and maybe it's heading that way again, for now. A nice DCAM of this proof error Lincoln cent is a definate asset to any collection and registry IMHO. I also happen to like 1990 no s cents.Just think if PCGS upgraded 10 of the 70 Specimens already graded. The price of 69 D cams would go down to below 10 K.Then perhaps the 68's would trrade for approximately 8K.I personallly think the spread is too much between 68's and 69's.PCGS and david Hall both know this fact.Have you ever wondered why there have been over 100 Proof 70 D Cams graded since the 1963 Proof 70 D cam debacle?

It's a smart play devaluing PR70DC's to limit risk. I've wondered why they haven't made more 1964's in PR70DC to offset liability on the the lone specimen that Gerry has. Five or six would drop it from a $40k liability to a $2,500 one.

This is exactly why I believe if you are going to "invest" in a Lincoln proof cent, invest in a true rarity like the 1990 no S rather than in a pop top PR70DCAM whose population can and will be controlled by the grading services rather than by the coin's rarity. JMHO. Steveimage

Frankly, if I were a "dealer" (or anyone) with near/mid-term profit in mind, I'd be hard pressed to pay much more than $5,000-$5,500.
  • SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
Well, the latest dealer to dealer transaction on EBAY for $5,600 on a PR68DCAM makes THAT the current market for the coin.

I took a quick check of the 1959-2004 and 1950-2004 Lincoln cent proof registries with varieties to see how many of the 1990 no S Lincolns are registered. Here is what I found for the top 25 sets after eliminating duplicate registries.

    Registries with PR67 1
    Registries with PR68 9
    Registries with PR69 2
    Registries closed 5
    Registries needing coin 8
    Total 25

So there are at least 8 people out there who have close to a complete set registry who need this coin and, either can't afford to buy it now or believe they can get it at a lower price later. We shall see how things work out. Steveimage

Steve, I meant to update this thread after Long Beach.

There was a dealer there with TWO 68DC's asking $7,500 each.

A couple of the "usual suspects" have returned to EBay in the last two weeks, and I'm not expecting a sale.

EBAY #3961023221 is at $4,650 with 13 bids and no reserve. Ends at 7PM pacific time this Tuesday. Right now, I'd say the market for a PR68DCAM in PCGS is about $5.5k. Let's see where this one goes.

Is someone going to win this coin for $4,650? It is a bargin IMHO. Steveimage

I'm sure somebody has it plugged in to their sniper program. We'll see.

I wonder if the mark over the date is on the coin or the holder. That could have an effect on price.

It went for $6,137 with a sniper coming in with 2 seconds left to grab it, just like Doug suspected. So........, the coin's market value has gone back up to about $6k again in PCGS PR68DCAM. Steveimage

Sometimes you just KNOW when a coin won't sell. Wrong time to push the PR69DCAM at over $12k IMHO. Heritage has one coming up at Palm Beach too. This coin needs a "rest" for a few months and should then come back with renewed interest. Steveimage
