Set Registry Cost...Keeping Track

I am putting together a '78 Topps registry set, and have just decided to record how much it costs to do, for resale, insurance, nostalgia, etc. Does anyone else do this? If so what particular things do you keep track of? I am recording purchase place and date, raw cost and grading fees, or if I bought it already graded and card #.

  • I did this on my T-205s. I began the spreadsheet back in early 2003 mainly with my purchase price, and the current SMR. It has been fun to watch it grow and change when SMR has changed (on this set it has gone up a lot).

    I highly recomend it.

You make money on the purchase not the sale.
  • Current SMR is a good idea, I will add that. Thanks.

It's all part of the fun.

I keep track of my price paid per transaction, my set completion percentage, and my SMR completion percentage. My set may be only 40% complete, but I know my cards comprise 55% of the set's SMR value.

I have a spread sheet detailing the cost for every card in the registry. I do not, however, keep track of the raw I buy. I just want to know what every card added to the registry cost. I also don't keep track of the cost of submissions because I have traded and sold many of these cards. This is a hobby, if it were making a living I would keep track of every aspect.

Good luck on the 78's! I love this set image

I am too scared to keep track. Its just fun for me to browse and buy and never be reminded how much money I have spent on my sets and what other things I could have done with that money.

Keeping track would kill my fun!!! LOL
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

while i'm quite anal about a few things (my cards and CD's, for instance), i'm very disorganized when it comes to many others, including money management. plus, as others have said, there's that "do i really even want to know?" aspect of keeping track of card purchaes. i have no idea how much money i have in my two complete sets, but i actually have started keeping track of a few fledgling sets. for each set, i have a crappy little spreadsheet with columns for card number and name, grade, purchase price, date of sale and seller. i also have a separate sheet for raw card purchases, with additional columns for eventual PSA grade and price realized for the stuff i end up selling.

  • I totally understand the "I don't want to know how much I'm spending" thought, I kinda feel the same way. But one day, hopefully many moons from now, I may have to (or want to), sell the set. This way, I will know the minimum I would sell for. Also, I think it's kind of cool to have a record of the whole thing. I mean, I could be putting this set together for YEARS!!

    I don't want to know.
    Good for you.

  • << <i>I don't want to know. >>

Agreed. I'm in denial about how much I'm spending.
  • I hope our wives/partners don't get to read this thread!

  • I would be ill if someone told me how much I spent on my collection, but, I don't look back. I enjoy it way too much. But, I think I would be surprised, too, to see how much money the cards would bring if I put them on ebay.. . . much more than I paid, for sure.
