anyone have a checking account in the early 80's?

I was looking to buy a signed check of a dead hof'er that was cashed back in '84. It doesn't come with any 3rd party authentication, but that wouldn't seem to be a problem due to the medium. My problem is the check doesn't have the individual's name and address printed on it in the top left hand corner like every checking account i've ever had. was that the way checks used to be? the auto looks very close to other authenticated ones i've seen, is it even likely a person would forge a signed check and be able to make it look like it's been cashed? suggestions?

Got my first checking account in '79, the name and address was in the same place it is today.

I've seen older checks that have just the name in the upper left corner, probably early 60's.

  • new checks come this way. I got some check from a local bank just a few years ago like that.
    Probably a "temp"check

  • Sounds like a starter check. Back then it was very easy to open a checking account with minimal ID. After opening an account and making your first deposit, the bank would give you a "generic" pack of 20 to 25 checks to tide you over until you got your checks with name and address printed on them.

  • Duner- what's been previously mentioned is true. Temp checks were frequently used for new accounts, but most people would write their name and address in the spot where it would eventually be on a printed check. That was standard procedure at the time (matter of fact it's standard procedure now). If you are not confident, pass on the deal and wait for the next one.

If I'm not mistaken, temporary or starter checks are still used today with some banks. It's not uncommon to see them turn up every now and then.
