My first snipe

I set my first snipe today to get a book that I really want. I set it for $45. The bidding went from about $6 to about $12 in the last minute. Then, as I hit reload to watch my snipe launch, I saw the bid jump to $45. I figured that I won. Nope. It looks like a prior bidder had his proxy set at exactly $45 and I had my snipe set for the same amount. So, the bid history shows two bids for the same amount, but he won.

Well, I'm sure that I made one seller happy, one bidder unhappy and one new sniper frustrated.

Oh well. I'm happy with the service, just unhappy that I didn't bid $45.01. (I assume his proxy had to be for exactly $45 or it would have bumped the final bid to $46 or whatever comes after $45, right? So, a single extra penny would have won it for me.)

You're absolutely right. The number 46 comes right after 45 (and just before the number 47).

I used www.justsnipe.com and it's really easy. You get five free snipes a week, which is plenty for me (at least I think it will be.) I think $5 a month gets you unlimited snipes and extra goodies. Mine launched with five seconds left, I think.

The strangest thing is giving them your ebay name and password. I have to say that I felt all dirty giving that to someone else.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't already know it!

  • I've said it in other posts and I'll say it again. Since I've been sniping I've been winning more auctions and at lower prices. I've estimated that I've been saving an average of 25-30% on my winning bids because of sniping. Which leaves me more money for cardsimage
I resisted too, but it's time to come to the dark/snipe side Mikeimage

I'm trying JustSnipe tonight. I'm concerned because they have a service announcement about changes on Ebay pages screwing up their bids.
Also, AuctionStealer gives you 3 bids a week. I've used that site numerous times with no probs.

BTW I hate sniping - but I also hate taxes and gotta live with them both.

Reading this thread suggested to me that ebay is highly vulnerable to a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on multiple sniping services.

ebay could not prevent it in any fashion - it's not their site which would be attacked. It would cost sellers large sums of money, because as more people go to sniping services, fewer bids are cast in other fashions (and more of those bids are low, tracking bids).

It would, if it happened repeatedly, lead to significant buyer and seller dissatisfaction with ebay.

    Hi Nick
If everyone sniped, wouldn't the sellers just adapt - set higher minimums or reserves?
