Mr. Mint SGC SNAFU?

I saw a mention on a different message board about a problem Alan Rosen had with SGC some while back. Does anyone know the story? From what I can tell, Rosen sent a card for grading, not knowing it was a rare variation. SGC didn't catch it, and Rosen sold it. When he later figured out that it was a variation, he went back to SGC and complained that they had a responsibility to catch the variation and label it as such, even if he missed it himself.

Can someone fill in the details and the end of the story?

  • I think it was the Doyal (sp?) error t206. If i remember correctly Mr Mint bought it at a show from some kid and had sgc look at it befor paying. They gave it a clean bill of health and Rosan bought it. Afterwards he had it graded by SGC and eventually it was sold to Keith Olberman who thought something was wrong and asked his driver to confirm his suspisions. Supposedly it was so bad that the driver picked out the alteration right away.

At least thats what i remember of the story.

  • interesting story! I find it unbelievable that "MR. Mint" couldn't see that the "natl" was freaking glued on the front. Goes to show money doesn't buy common sense. Also proves the common sense notion that ALL grading companies are not perfect and some get through the cracks.

I wonder what percentage of the value of the card Rosen paid the kid for it. Suppose if he gets some $ back from SGC he'll share it with the ki he bought it from? image

I thought Rosen got reimbursed for what he paid for it, although he wanted to be reimbursed for the lost profit from Olberman.
Olberman wrote a story in VCBC called "Slab This" in which he stated it was his opinion that no one should ever buy a graded card. His reasoning was that it was a false sense of security, and that slabbing caused one to take someone else's opinion instead of learning about cards, grading and counterfeits and coming to your own conclusion.

I would like to see the kid take out a full page ad in Tuff Stuff showing him with a fan of cash in front of his face! Would serve "Mr. Mint" right!
