1980 Topps Rickey Henderson graffiti!

Hi,

I have a 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson RC that I bought for $5.00 at a flea market back in 1981. The man I bought it from actually wrote "$5.00" in pencil on the back of the card. Sad thing is its pretty mint except for that. My question is should I try to erase the writting or just leave it alone. I plan on getting it PSA graded but really dont know if I should send it in like that or try to erase it. Any help is appreciated.

Matt

Personaly I would try to erase it. Gently try a small area. Because if it is sent in with the pencil mart it will get a qualifier MK. WHich lowers the valeu. If you
dont care about value or high grades then leave it.

  • Ricky was $5 back in 1981??

How hard was it written on the card? If very lightly you might be able to erase it but if he pushed down hard then it'll leave an indentation mark I'd think
  • How does PSA view erasing evidence? i have a vintage card i'm senidng in that has traces of fountain pen marks on the back and some indentions without marks, but with evidence of erasure action. Will this simply be viewed as a MK? or automatically marked to poor/fair? or ungradeable due to "altering"

You might make it worse if you try to erase.

But this whole bit about writing the price onto the item is not that rare. It's using low intelligence, but not rare. Granted they are not hobbyists, but common sense would dictate not to write on a card. I hate it when at book stores they pencil in how much a book costs--I mean these are collectors' books.

A book restorer could help you with that pencil mark problem. There has got to be a better way to remove it than just erasing it.

Even neatly erased marks will get you the (MK) qualifier. I've picked up a couple very cheaply where I really had to look to find the erased marks on the back.
