Finally got a Scotland Ryal... images

Just sent the check off today and can't wait to see it in person. image It's in an NGC VF30 holder.... the Mary & Henry variety that was struck from 1565-67 until Henry was murdered.

I've been to Scotland five times and I've never seen a palm tree there, so I've always been very confused about why they put one on a coin.

When in doubt, don't.

  • Congrats, that's very cool. Is that a countermark on the obverse?

Yes, that's the crowned thistle countermark of 1578 (as opposed to the heart & star countermark of 1575) used to increase the value of silver coins due to rising price of silver bullion. It the case of ryals that meant the value went up from 30 shillings to 36 shillings and ninepence.

That is amazing. I really like the crown and thistle counterstamp.
