New Registry set - hot on Mitch's trail!

I just registered a new set; the 1950-1958 Lincoln Proofs.

I purchased the 50,51,52 in PR67RD several years ago and then picked up
the 53,54,55 in 67RD,67RD,67CA as a group last year.

Since then I've been lazily looking for the 56,57,58 in 67CA but haven't found
nice coins at a nice price. Just last week I found the '58 and, when it arrived
today, decided to register the set and see where I landed...

I like well-matched sets, so am seeking the 56 & 57 in PR67CA - if anyone
has nice examples of these coins for sale, let me know.

Once these holes are filled in, this set will be sitting around the 12th spot
or so (I didn't do the math) and I may consider it complete. On the other
hand, I might start looking for DCAM coins for the later dates, or work from
the '54 backwards to makes those coins CAM...so many possibilities!

Ken: Congratulations in advance for passing me in the very near future image

I really do like this series though and would like to try to build a "top 5" set in the years ahead.

    Sorry, I misread the thread!

Congratulations on your set. Lincoln Proofs are awesome to collect!

  • Mitch - This will end up a quality, well-matched set, but I'm sure you could
leave me in the dust anytime you had a mind to.

The other option I didn't mention after I complete this is to move backwards
into earlier years. I've always liked the 1936-42 era proof coins, as well as
the early matte proofs - now that sounds like fun! image

Ken: I confess I have a total lack of focus on this series. Just the "price" of working on too many collections at the same time. A few years ago, I was fortunate enough to buy not one, but two, 1950 Lincolns in PCGS-PR66DCAM. What was fascinating to me with the coins was the fact that the reverses of each coin had strong cameo contrast. I believe PCGS does not consider the reverse of wheat cents in assigning the DCAM grade. In other words, the reverse can have virtually no cameo contrast at all and still the coin can grade DCAM. I would not be personally surprised if years from now, these two sided DCAM wheat cents actually command strong premiums from collectors. Time will tell of course.
