New Collector Needs Help

Hello!

I am new to this forum and I am new at coin collecting too. I have been collecting for about 2 months. I need some tips. Please tell me what do I need to do as a beginner.

    Do a lot of research before buying an expensive coin.

    Ask a lot of questions and this is the place to do so. There's a lot of experience and experts around here.

    Buy a good book like the Red Book.
    ask lots of questions.
    And be willing to listen.

    ANA grading standards

    Once you figure out what type of coins you like........buy books just for that series.

    Buy "Coin Collecting for Dummies" and read it cover to cover before you make your first major purchase (however you define that). It's a great book written by an excellent numismatist, Ron Guth.

    I agree, definately buy "A Guide Book of United States Coins" which is commonly known as the Red Book because of its red cover. Look at lots of coins before spending much money. Have fun!

  • Welcome! You're already ahead of the game watching these forums. Look at all the Ebay scam POSTS carefully. I like both the above books plus another cheap paperback--"Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott A. Travers. The Travers book is very easy reading, and in a fun way, points out all the right ways to collect and mistakes that EVERYONE makes occasionally. The most important thing is to buy coins you like, but realize that your tastes will change over time.

    I am also new to the forum. I have been selling coins from my Mother-in-Laws estate and this forum has been extremely helpful with identifing some foriegn coins as well as the pricing of US coins. In fact I am about ready to stop selling and start collecting. Welcome and enjoy, there is alot of knowledge here.
