What would you do on this ebay sale

I sold a coin on ebay and today I get this email.

Dear louis-c,

we would like to do a mutuial on this coin as we don't want to pay and then send back so to save us both the time and hassle please do a mutuial and u will get your money back from ebay i am sorry we have to many of this year as it is now if you have any 99's for sale then we can still do it and we will even give you more money for the 99 sorry about this

It looks like he doesn't want to complete the purchase and says he doesn't want to pay and return and we should just forget it.

What should I do?

First thing I'd block him from bidding on my auctions.

Tell him to either pay up or else you'll report him to eBay.

I think he's referring to the option in the process a seller goes through to get fees refunded, where the seller and bidder agree not to complete the sale by mutual agreement. This saves him from getting any marks against his account as a Non-paying Bidder. From the way he phrased his inquiry (or, tried to phrase it, anyway...) this guy seems pretty familiar with this process, he probably makes a habit of this sort of thing.

Since he's already said he'd return the coin if you held him to his bid, you're probably best off to just cancel the auction as he's suggested. If it were my auction, once all fees were returned I'd leave either neutral or "negative positive" feedback stating that he backed out of paying.

    I agree with Sean.
He might offer to buy it cheaper in a day or 2. Keep his e-mails and report him to eBay.

  • I would respond by saying:

Hi, the mutuial can be okay if the return is not mutuial to the feedback system and the money u get to be the 99's that for sale. No need to say sorry for this because is the stuff that can happen with 99's. Sound fair?

  • You can't force anyone to follow through on a deal. As I offer a return policy I just let the buyer off the hook when this happens. Yes, it has happened more than once. I put them on my blocked list and don't post feedback until they do.

Actually, you can, per the fine print. When you register, you agree that by placing a bid you enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item if you win.

I allow customers to return a coin for any reason. So I can't force them to keep the coin. So when they want out I let 'em out which saves me the hassle of shipping the item and waiting for it to come back.

There is a job opening at the local Red Cross for a turnip truck driver and if you believe that then you will believe you can force someone to buy a coin they won on ebay. image

I'd agree do a a mutuial, but I'd define that as him sending payment and you'll ship the coin.
