American Eagle 101

I have been buying the proof sets of the American Eagle Gold coins directly through the mint. Is this the best way, or is it like paying sticker for a car. Are there any trustworthy sources to get them cheaper. Also, I keep them in the case they send them in and put them in my safe. I have seen other posts talking about storage. Is this okay or is there something else I should be doing? Thanks.

  • Welcome. I buy my sets from the mint. There are dealers here who might be able to tell you if they get quantity discounts and then sell for less than the mint.

You can usually get them cheaper in the secondary market especially since the prices keep going up. Unless no one buys them and the mintage is extremely low for a particuliar year, but I haven't seen that happen lately.
  • They are nice coins, but you pay a huge premium for them and they don't appreciate in value, even when the price of gold goes up. I sold 3 sets from 2001-2003 and barely recovered my cost. Storing them in the holders they come in seems to be OK. Gold is a pretty inert metal, so it doesn't react with other chemicals very much. If you do remove them from the holders, do it carefully because the holders have pretty tight collars on them.

  • Thanks. What other gold proofs would you suggest? I'm doing this mostly as an investment, but I like to have gold in my hands - it's a lot nicer to look at and show the kids than a stock certificate. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the different coins/ingots? Thanks again.

Many dealers sell the bullion version (non-Proof) that is gold melt value plus a premium. For investment purposes, that's probably the best way to go. You can search the web to find which dealer adds the lowest premium to the cost. I have also noticed that most foreign gold usually has a lower premium and is .999 pure gold. I like the look of the U.S. coins though.

Personally, I only have 2 gold coins. For my coin collection rather than investing. They are both U.S.
