Do you think the new $3 gold book by Bowers and Winter will affect the $3 gold market

Do you think that the new book on $3 gold which will be coming out soon by Bowers and Winter will have an effect on the market for those coins? I never realized how rare they are and how low the mintages are. The prices are reasonable (right now) as well. It seems like an interesting series that I never really focused on. Do you think that prices will increase or demand will increase as a result of this book? Or do you think that it really will not have any impact because "you are either a $3 collector or not"?

I think there will definitely be some new 3.00 collectors born and others who had only a passing interest will probably pick up a few 3's because of the new info about them.

It's a neat series and a complete set which is do able for considerably less than 7 figures even when one factors in the major rarities.

I wonder when there will be a new quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle book done to continue the series. They're really needed.

    Tom:

I own the Taglione books on gold dollars and quarter eagles and the one on the economic theory of the coin market, but I never bought the $3 book. They were written in the 1980's, so the information is probably a little out of date. But it is still a useful coin-by-coin analysis and I check the info against other references that I have. Do you have these books?

    Hey Mike,

No I don't have those. I have just about everything else though and many like the akers books are in many respects way out of whack with what reality is. So it's great that Dave Bowers is doing this as there's a real need for updated information.

Coin books like this usually have, at least in part, a promotional objective.

    Tom,

I at first thought you said six figures, and as you know, that is impossible (unless someone gifts you the 54-D).

There are many ways to collect $3's besides collecting the whole series. DW does a good job in breaking it up into manageable short sets that would appeal to a greater audience. I, for one, am one coin (1862) away from the 1861-5 Civil War short set in choice AU. It's a neat and attractive set that I am considering having entombed in an NGC 5 coin holder.

I will post a link to DW's article on $3's later when I have more time.

    Hey Robert,

Nope, 7 figures. The one in the march sale will sell for more than that. And the one coming up with just break it although who the heck knows in this market!
