OC Cards: Gotta love 'em...

Just a note that I'm new to the whole graded card thing, but I'm already learning to love OC cards.
A few weeks back I picked up 2 1972 Billy Martin PSA 9 (OC)s and a '72 Pirates Team PSA 8 (OC) for less than $12 shipped. Last night I scored a PSA 7 (OC) (vertical) 1962 Lou Brock Rookie for significantly less than the SMR of a PSA 5. The '62 set is notoriously condition sensitive, and the raw Brocks I've been seeing on Fleabay made me go for the graded due to questionable scans and the old EX raw / PSA 5 premium I've seen.

Since I don't plan on reselling these cards, I think it's nice to get the higher quality card for a lower price. Anyone else like em?

If you like OC cards - you will get some amazing bargains. Many collectors, especially Registry members, shy away from cards with qualifiers - but I have seen some beautiful PSA 9 OC cards that you could grab for a song. I had a 1974 Munson PSA 9 OC that I should have resubmitted for review, as it was barely OC. Instead I sold it on Ebay, and it sold for around $20.

  • I think the answer is a lound and clear, NO. That is why you can get them for such a great bargian. I have a few myself and the one's that I remember I have gotten between 10% and 30% of the 3 grade lower SMR. Don't really care for the OC but they are hard to pass at the right price.

I have to concur that they are a great value, but to me, I would rather have a straight 7 than a 9OC.

Something about excessive side-to-side or top-to-bottom shifting really distracts my eye.

  • ah man I thought they were coming out with The O.C. trading cards image I wouldn't mind some cards of Rachel Bison and Olivia Wilde

Ironically I'm the opposite. I would rather have the 9OC, in MOST cases. It all depends on the eye appeal. That's were the real bargains are. A borderline 9OC card at a PSA 7 price is a steal.

I like centered cards, but if the price is right and I like the card overall, I'll take the OC. We have had this talk recently - would be nice to have both tho.

I like this Lemon card even tho it is an OC and bought it cheap.

Now, talk about luck, I got this Joe G. card below smr which surprised me since it's nicely centered!

So, I guess like the group AD/DC - I can take them both ways.

  • I have always felt that PSA has the O/C qualifier for the collector who likes a razor sharp corner, but is not too concerned about the centering. It is a love-hate thing. The registry knocks off a couple for any qualifier 4 or better. Raw submissions can be done to reject any qualifiers.

Always interested in Hank Aaron items-currently buying Aaron OPC singles or lots-graded or raw.
  • OC is fine to collect for fun, but forget the investment side of it. Plus how do you dump a whole collection of OC cards if you need to? Plus you can crack out of PSA and send to SGC or GAI who do not use qualifiers and prob come out better money wise.

  • For me, I really hate OC or qualified cards. What I don't get, if you have a 9OC and would rather have a straight 7- YOU STILL HAVE A OFF CENTERED CARD! I try to stay away from both. Just my 2 cents..

  • This Lasorda rookie went for less than 10% of the straight 9 price. The eye appeal still looked pretty good.

This is the type of card I'd make an exception for. A HOF card, with a light colored background that blends into the white border and OC'ed only 70-30 to 80-20 (not a miscut).

I think my tolerance for OC depends a lot on the card and how badly OC it is. For example, the Feller that Mike listed above is perhaps affordable in an 8OC while beyond what I would ever spend for a straight 8. He's a HOFer and if I were planning to keep it forever I have no problem with that card with a qualifier.

I also just got some 81-82 basketball HOFers (Jabbar, Magis, Erving, Malone) graded and several got 9OC. Well they don't look very OC, marginally at best. I'm fine with these cards too.

Where I do have a problem with centering is A) when it is way off bordering on miscut , and B) when it's in my registry set.

I also will collect OC cards if they do nothing to its appeal.
    My recent bargains:
    1974 Fisk PSA 9 OC 4.50
    1974 Brooks Robinson PSA 9 OC 4.00
    1964 Duke Snider PSA 8 OC 14.00

Some may not think those are some great bargain but as for the 74's, they arent badly centered at all.
The 64 Snider is just a bit top to bottom and doesnt take away from the card's appeal at all either.
  • The only way I'll go OC is if: . . . it's with the cutest little curvy thing this side of West Street.

Uh, I agree with Chad's comments: "For me, I really hate OC or qualified cards. What I don't get, if you have a 9OC and would rather have a straight 7- YOU STILL HAVE A OFF CENTERED CARD! I try to stay away from both. Just my 2 cents.."

  • I remember last year I asked this question on my PSA 8 OC #305 Bowman Willie Mays Rookie on the message boards. I could smell the cigar smoke coming from the old salts saying "OC thats a Barker wouldn't touch em". If you are a $5-$100 buyer/seller, sure OC isn't the best investment most of the time. But, thanks to the bad rap on OC's the OC HIGH Grades sell low then sell high soon afterwards. Not all OC's are equal and not all OC's rate a 2 grade deduct and "you can take that to the BANK"; I did.... I didn't make a killing but got a bit over the next grade down. I bought it two grades down and was happy to take the risk with an OC that wasn't way off center. I keep looking but now you can't buy one. Yeah it's easy to say you'd rather have straight a 9 over a 9OC etc etc etc... what else is new... and I'd like to afford a Mantle Rookie straight 9., " BUT I CAN'T" 'I CAN'T AFFORD IT" OC's GOTTA LOVE EM!

jskirwin, You stated that you dont plan on selling the cards at some point, so I think its great you are getting those kinds of deals. Some people have different standards. Some may like razor sharp corners, some want nicely centered cards but will sacrifice a touched corner or two for it. Some dont mind low grade as long as there are no creases. Its really what you like that matters since they will be in your collection. Personally I just bought a 1955 Topps Koufax rookie in PSA 6, and not even 3 days later, I see a PSA 8 OC sell for almost the same price I paid. Wish I would have waited a few more days. It was a real nice card.

For Me, I would NEVER buy an OC card, a card that is OC annoys me much, much more than soft corners. Good for you though as you can get some great cards at a bargain.
  • Here is a pretty nice O/C.

I will counterpoint myself after checking that link of the Munson card, a card like that IMO is not that bad, I would rather get a grade lower than have the OC attached to it. When I think of OC I'm thinking poor looking picture or almost worse a Diamond cut card.

munson is nice, the t/b o/c has better eye appeal than a l/r o/c

  • ..my thoughts exactly !!!!!!! not all o/c's are created equal. this one is 9 lbocl 9 little bit off centered looking. I just don't feel the O/C warrants this card as a 7. Should be at least an 8. I'll post another nice O/C later.
  • Here are a couple more. The Aaron was a 8 o/c. Should have been a 9 o/c. The corners will cut you. The Bench is cutting it close. I tend to keep my o/c's raw in nice 1" screwdowns. PSA doesn't always follow the their rules on the eye appeal aspect of a card.
