New Collector (NEED HELP!)

So my father in law got me started on buying Walking Liberty Proofs and now I have a complete run. I would buy one when we bought one for him at Christmas time....so that is pretty cool. I have always collected cards and have PSA graded, etc. so I am DANGEROUS.

Where are some good sites to go to that are honest dealers? I am thinking about going after proof sets next. I don't know- may just jump right in and get after it on what I am gonna do! Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

David

  • There are a lot of good dealers out there. Many members of the forum are dealers and I've purchased from them with no problem. I don't normally buy proof sets and when I do it's from a local shop. Check out some of our "established" members - good luck.

When you said walking Liberty proofs, at first I thought you meant the Walking Liberty Half Dollars (1936-1942 proofs)... Then I realized you are probably talking about American Silver Eagles (1986 - 2004).

I'd start with sets from the mint first... After it is hard to tell. I'd avoid the huge CoinWorld advertisers.....

What you buy will have an effect on where you ought to shop.

If you are buying modern proof sets in the original packaging, you could find those at any coin show at competitive prices, plus be able to look at the material before buying. Can you get to any shows in your area? That would be cheaper than buying through the mail. Going to coin shows is a great way to get acquainted with a number of dealers and see a ton of material.

Do you have a Red Book? I also recommend you read "Coin Collector's Survival Manual" by Scott Travers before you jump in to spending serious money.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Thanks for the replies! I have always had a soft spot for the Buffalo Nickel...so I will probably start their while picking up proof sets here and there to keep some sense of diversity. I also have a nice huge lot (100 +) of half dollar liberties and franklins that were my grandmothers....they didn't collect baseball cards..but she kept a ton of these. The cool thing about them when we found them was that she grouped them by years, wrapped them in kleenex, straped a rubber band on it and labeled it with a tiny piece of paper. I guess when you have alot of late teens and early twenties in the walking liberties and early 50's to late 60's of 'ol Ben..you have to stay organized!
I just want to have fun with it....make some good investment choices (proof sets, etc) and try to understand the craziness!

Now...I know that alot of you probably will freak out when I say this....but I do watch the home shopping network coin vault just for the entertainment and to try to get some knowledge out of it. If they have something interesting I then at least go research it and try to learn about how they are ripping people off! image

You guys are great! I can't wait to learn more from your posts....just let me know who the good guys are! image
