LaFayette Dollar

Okay Commem experts... how bad is the lustre on this coin? I have read that the lustre is poor and there are many die polish lines and the overall quality is not so hot... further, the examples I have seen are just not that impressive. Are these graded on a curve?

Yeah they are known for swirling die polishing. I am no expert but I don't think you will them with the same luster a morgan would have. I wish I had mine with me and I would post a picture. mike
  • Ok at the risk of sounding a little too "self promoting"...if you go to heritage website..under future auctions..you can pull up the heritage signature sale coming up at long beach next month..The nicest ever( in my opinion ) Lafayette will be sold.. it has great color and lustre..i would link it but lack the computer skills..and yes its mine..at least for a few more weeks..

The awesomely toned ex-PCGS MS67 in the Smithsonian collection has blazing lustre image

  • Hi,

I assume this is the Lafayette referred to above, and Mr. Scher is right - that is a nice, nice coin:

Did you know that Lafayette dollars are technically undated and therefore illegal. I think there are graded just like regular silver dollars and that few survive that have not been damaged or cleaned-----------------------BigEimage

  • I sure don't think they are graded on a curve.

I'd say that will do it!
That coin would give you several points.
Do you prefer white or toned commems?

I like the tarnished ones, though I believe high grade white ones are harder to find---------------------------------BigE

    My Laffer, no toning:

The lustre doesn't really show up on my scanner, but it's pretty shiny.
