OT: cars not cards

While we all marvel at crudely printed pictures of guys on tiny pieces of cardboard and the prices they fetch at auction, I got caught up watching a show on Speed TV (a car-related cable channel) last week that really hooked me. It was a tape of a classic car auction, and they are showing the 2005 edition live this week. I was never really a gear head, I didn't get my first car till I was 26. I've always appreciated real classics. But I watched a 1956 Mercedes gullwing coupe sell for over $300K and I couldn't look away. These machines are absolutely beautiful. This year's auction will have over 1000 cars, the largest classic car auction ever, supposedly. They've got the car of my dreams, a boat-tail Auburn (not my dream color, though). This should be fun to watch.

  • Must be nice to throw that kind of cash at a hobby.. I'm also a car guy myself, though my project isn't nearly as grand: a 1971 Porsche 914. The poor man's Porsche.

  • Barret Jackson is damn cool to watch. It's amazing to see people drop so much $$ on those obscure cars. I'd like to be able to bid on something, but it's way out of my league.
I've got a 68 Mustang that is slowly coming together. What do you guys have?

A '99 Cavalier Z24 that's given me nothing but grief. My ideal car would be a 2002 or 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX. The 4-wheel drive would come in handy here during winter.

Another poor man's Porsche : 1983 Porsche 944. The paint job I put on it is worth twice what the car is. My mechanic told me this week that I was going to have to start looking for a new car. My response : F*** That!

  • Finally a subject I can speak with some authority on. I have degree in automotive restoration which I recieved form McPherson College in McPherson, KS. I work at a restoration shop in MN where we work on strcitly pre-WWII cars. I have a 70 swinger myself. In 2003 a car that we had done won best in class at Pebble Beach, it was a 1932 Murphy bodied Buick that was owned by Charles Howard(seabiscuit's owner). McPherson College is sponsored by some of the biggest names in the industry: Jay Leno, Criag Jackson(barret-jackson), McKeel Hagerty(hagerty Insurance)

You have good taste! My favorite is the Duesenberg - a well restored copy will set you back about a million and the Cord is also a great car. I believe, the Duesie, Cord and "boat-tail" were built in Auburn, Indianna. These are all non-production line custom cars - again I believe.

The Auburn I really want was in Seabiscuit. When the Jockey Wolf arrives at the track in Mexico, he's getting out of a cream-colored one. Dreamy. I wish the website had estimates or something. I know nothing will go cheap, but there are a lot that I don't imagine would break the bank. The VW delivery van for instance. Even the VW Bus from That 70s Show would be cool, but it will probably be bid up because Ashton Kutcher has had his hands on it. Or the 1950s Packard coupe is very sweet, all red, black, white, chrome. Or the Cord roadster. Or...maybe I should get back to work instead of surfing that site.

That sounds awesome. Do you ever get tired of a car and just want to get it done? I have always thought restoration would be so cool, but I am afraid that I will lose interest/patience about 1 day after I have completely stripped the car. My wife would kill me.

  • Some cars you do get bored of. especially when they have been there for couple years. It typically takes us two years to completly restore a car. If the car is a looker or has a good story it is fun to work on. Here is a picture of the buick.1932 Murphy Bodied Buick image
