What is the Distinction Between "Recolored" and Artifically Toned"?

    I always thought "recolored" was for copper only.

    That is my impression as well.
  • AT means that an artificial means was used to make the coin look older/toned. Recoloring is trying to make the coin look untoned. They are opposite in the desired outcome.

    With respect to copper coinage mentioned previously, "re-coloring" is typically an attempt to make a copper coin appear to be original "RD", as opposed to "RB" or un-original "RD".

    Makes sense, other than the fact the Lincoln I linked above sure looks purple to me.

    The term Recolored is also be used for copper than was cleaned then retoned with something like Deller's Darkener to make it look original, unmessed-with BR, not necessarily RD or RB.

    recoloring is to attempt to make it look like NATURAL tone.

    artificial toning is to attempt to make it look like UN-NATURAL, BUT MARKET-ACCEPTABLE tone,
    like bullseye toning, which is NOT NATURAL, but IS m-a
