Winning A Coin on E-Bay After The Top Bidder Pulled Out

Just wondering if any "runner up bidder" on these boards won a coin on E-bay after the top bidder either pulled out or rescinded their bid. If so, I'd like to hear about it. I just want to get an idea of how frequently this happens.

    yes,
If that user bumped my bid I made them go down to the bid I had before they put me to my max bid.

    I agree with ttown.

The bidder who "backed out" could be a shill bidder and they overestimated what your high bid was (or at least how much you wanted the item).
  • I never accept 2nd chance offers. In my book its a scam.

  • 95% of the time it's a scam to sell 2 coins, evade fees, not deliver and other problems you don't need IMHO.

  • Most of the time when that happens, you are being shilled........
  • This has only happened to me once and the buyer sent me a second-chance-offer to purchase the coin at the bid amount I had been winning with prior to the bidder that withdrew's bid.

If it is done through eBay, it is not a scam. Fees are not avoided by doing second chance offers-the commission fees still apply.

It's not always a scam. You just have to know or find out about who the seller is to see if they are legit. I just had this happen last week with EBWcoin (Ernie, from here on the boards). I got outbid in one of his auctions, he sent a second- chance-offer to me because he had a second coin. At the time I didn't know who Ernie was so I started a thread here to find out if anyone had dealt with him before. Got imput from the forum peeps.

To make a long story short Ernie had a second coin, he sent me images and I agreed to purchase the coin through eBay using second-chance-offer and buy-it-now. Not only was this a legitamate offer, but the coin Ernie sent me is much nicer than the one in the original auction.

  • I've only had it happen once and I jumped on it. I threw out a lowball bid and ended up getting a nice Morgan that I quickly flipped for a small profit.

Nothing wrong with it if it comes through the eBay system.

It happened to me once. It was a coin album I'd never seen before (or since) and the high bidder supposedly backed out. When the seller offered it to me at my max bid, I countered with a lower bid and he accepted. I was happy with the item.

I never never except second chance offers, when you are offered one just ask the seller if he is willing to except your bid amount, before the winning bid if not it's a scam!!!

I don't think you are referring to 2nd chance offers.
Yes, I have been the high bidder on 2 coins on eBay and been outbid. Then the new high bidder retracted their bid which put me back in as high bidder and I won. Once, it was great. The other time I had already bid on a simillar coin and was afraid I was going to end up with 2 coins just alike. Luckily I got outbid on the other.
I think it happens quiet a bit.
  • 2nd chance offers aren't always a scam. I recenlty bid up a 2004 D ms68fb roosie, but still came up short in the last few seconds. I received a 2nd chance offer from a seller I trust (somone from this board if I'm not mistaken) and took it.
Also, if I know about a seller's decision to always offer a 2nd chance, like some I know of. I always bid low knowing that I will get the offer. I haven't been let down yet.
