Slightly OT - information needed

Im going to set up a display at a local coin show that's coming up here in a couple of weeks. Since I'm a wannabe, I don't own my own display cases, I rent them from the show sponsors. One problem that I have is that the coins look schlocky (more so than on their own merit) because they're on the bare bottom of the case. So, being the genius that I am, I've decided to get a couple of liners made so that I can put my coins on them - the problem is - I don't have the dimmensions of a standard coin display case as far as length and width - can smoeone help out? Thanks!

Frank

  • I can't be of any help on the dimensions, but would like to see you post pictures of the finished display. image What are you displaying, your toned Roosies ?

  • Worst case, just use the loose felt without the board and fold the edges under.
How much do they charge you to rent a case?
Just curious, I have my own wooden cases...they are so pretty.image

  • In one case I want to set up a display of my dimes. In the other case I'll put the coins I have for sale so was thinking that I wanted both to look nice. You can usually rent the cases for $10 each for the entire show.
  • What is this, GTG all over again.

Now someone is asking for free dimensions, how rudeimage

  • Well renting cases isnt too bad a thing to do. No breakage with all the traveling. No having to lug them all over the place. Just roll up your felt and carry it around with you, and a valice full of coins. Sure makes life easy.

Good luck on the upcoming shows. I agree, it's a lot easier to carry the felt than all the cases. But if you are planning to do many shows, buying a couple of used cases might be the way to go..

Here's Allstate's website. Has everything you need.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks guys - I appreciate the input - I only do 2 or 3 shows a year where I display coins so I may decide at some point to get my own cases.

Well from what I just saw renting them make's real good sense to me. About a hundred dollars a case cost but by renting you limit the possibility for damage by moving them around. Also not putting money into somthing you only need once in a while.

Pugs should be able to see the coins on the bottom of the case easily with their flat faces and all----------------BigE

Frank: I am also considering participating in some local area coin shows to try my hand at selling some excess collector's inventory (i.e. duplicates).

Is this simply a phase of collecting that some collectors like us evolve into as we accumulate a whole lot of "pretty stuff" within our specific collecting specialties (Morgans for me), and eventually wish to prune down the huge accumulation of various coins into a focused collection of coins with some common theme that represents our personal collecting preferences and is thus a reflection of our own personalities??

I have enjoyed selling duplicate coins to forum members via the BS&T forum, and plan to continue doing so. However, it is tempting to try one's hand at working your own table at a coin show to see how things work from the back side of the table...

I'd enjoy you and others sharing your thoughts on the above comments and observations. Thanks in advance for your posts!

  • Stuart - there's something to that - at different points in time I find myself with duplicates and upgrades and I may try to sell them on the internet, or as in this case, I'll take them to this local show first, although most people in this area don't seem to care much for toned coins, I find that being able to participate in the experience, getting in early and possibly getting in on some nice deals, or just talking to the other dealers and observing the comings and goings, makes this experience very much worthwhile for me.
