New Purchase: 1879 PCGS MS-64 Morgan Dollar -- Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's tonight's new purchase -- a pretty 1879 PCGS MS-64 Morgan Dollar which appears from the seller's photos (below) to be solid for the grade.

I like this coin in MS-64 because the price jumps about 9x to the next grade MS-65. How do you like her?

Stuart, nice coin and from what I can see from the pic the coin looks better then a 64 to me also.

But Stuart, you sniped that coin. Don't you know sniping is unfair? image

Isn't that a Heritage image? How can you snipe there?

It's not a Heritage image, but from a seller on eBay who still uses scans. Probably has nice luster the scans just won't show.

sure looks like a Heritage image unless the seller borrowed theirs.

Honest opinion.... this is where a scan can work to your benefit in evaluating a coin. I know the coin will look much better in person with decent luster. But, I also feel it will have a bit more chatter than you can see.

Now here's the real honest part, and where it will show up in a scan and in person you might not see it much.
The light brown around some of the edge in my opinion is a dip and re-tone job, or where the tone was etched into the surface.
I try to avoid this type of thing and sorry
for being so honest. If you like it is really all that matters. image

Eric: There were a whole 6 seconds left when I bid on this coin -- perhaps I pulled the trigger a couple of seconds too fast and left a bit too much time for me to get out bid! image

STMan: Thanks for your post and for providing some helpful insight. You may be correct about the toning. I'll post an update to this thread when I receive the coin to let you know how the coin (in person) compares with the scanned images.

Well Stuart, when the underbidder sends you a nastygram via eBay's email system, you can send him this:

Eric: Thankfully I have never received a nastygram from an underbidder. I typically do prefer to snipe my purchases on E-Bay because I feel that I get the coin cheaper that way. It seems to work well for me.

I snipe because I don't like to be shilled. I'm surprised you haven't got any nastygrams. I've received over 20 of them in the last seven years.

One of these days I'll post one I got, edited of course. I believe it contained 67 words, of which 31 are banned here. image

Yeah I got one a those nastygrams after I sniped the endroll toned 84-o in my set. It was sent by the owner of the 86th current finest set.

Bajjerfan: Perhaps one of the reasons that you have been able to assemble such a highly ranked Morgan Dollar registry set is that you have taken advantage of sniping opportunities to build it...

I've sniped a few to be sure. image

  • Very clean for the grade. The strike probably keeps it from a 65 holder, but I still think it's got a shot. I recently cracked out an ANACS 64 Morgan that's now in a PCGS 65 holder (a 2k jump in price.) Nice coin and good luck!

techeff: Thanks for your post and for your comments on my new 1879 Morgan. I agree with you that the strike on the periphery of the obverse in the motto and stars area does seem slightly weak and may be why the coin did not make the MS-65 grade.

The seller mentioned that he recently cracked the coin out of an old green label PCGS holder and resubmitted it as an upgrade candidate from MS-64 to MS-65. He felt that it was a shot 65, but it did not make it this time.

I will let you know how the coin looks in person after I receive it and have a chance to examine it closely. I'll post an update to this thread after receiving the coin.
