What the set registry is all about!

Ok, so this is a longer read, and maybe a feel good story. But too many times there is not enough "good sentiment" on the message boards.
Today is a day of mixed emotions for me. I have learned that in two of my most beloved Set Registry sets, I am in jeopardy of being dethroned from the top spot. Recently there have been 2 Bobby Jones cards (one a psa 8 and the other a psa 9) , that are the highest graded to date, and a Psa 9 Walter Hagen.
The competitive side of me feels like the Atlanta Falcons do right now. It has been a good run. Granted since I primarily collect old golf cards, I know I collect a couple of sets where there is not a lot of competition, but there also aren't a heck of alot of top quality 70 to 80 year old golf cards out there to be graded either.
The collector in me is thrilled as a couple of great examples have now surfaced, and I have had the chance to talk and meet via the phone and email 3 individuals that I had not has the pleasure of speaking with before.
One is new to golf cards altogether, One has been at it for about a year, and the other for a few years. Two of the three have collections , and certain cards, that I am obviously very envious of, and the other is just excited to be getting started in the mix.
The last few months has brought many other people to seek me out because of what they see in my registry listings (scanning in photos to your registry sets really breeds interest) and also because they occasionally read some of my vintage golf card posts on the message boards. I have literally gotten 15-20 contacts in the last 6 months from other collectors newer to golf cards, people asking about values or to help identify a scarce item, or to just talk about these great cards.
Which finally brings me to my point......In my opinion, this is what the registry program is all about Bringing new people in the mix, and putting collectors with similar interests in touch with one another.
For the countless people who collect baseball, football or basketball cards, this may seem obvious. For the niche collector like me, it is a wonderful way to meet new people and share with others a great hobby.
Thanks PSA for making this available to all of us. Best of luck to everyone with their collecting goals for 2005!

At this point I can only dream about being in the top 5 of the set I am collecting! You have done a tremendous job!

Golfcollector - thank you for that great post
Think I'll switch to collecting golf cards just to be among better folks.
The 1960's football guys are a bunch of cutthroat jackasses ...
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
That is when you find out if you have been collecting because you love the cards or you love the rank.
I wont mention any names but there are some who were #1 and the source of love and passion for a given set and
someone comes along and tops them, then they dump their set, never to be heard from again.
I think that this is the dark side of the registry. People who loved to collect a given set, and then lost all interest just becasue they cant reach #1,
or someone else bumps them from #1.
Feel the Force!
Loves me some shiny!

Carew ,
You mean Rob Ruth with his 55 Topps all americans right ?
Sounds like someone dropped in the rankings
Golfcollector is right though. Even if there were no awards, the Registry would still be a great place to meet others and build our sets. I wouldn't be as advanced in my sets if it wasn't for the help and camarderie of such fine board members as jasp24, augustaman, alohaet, packcollector, qualitycards, mantlefan (F. Evanov?), zardoz, drcp, andiehaley, Allanalan, Mike at NearMint cards, Mickey at Mickeys sportscards, cspier and even wolfbear
If I left anyone out, I apologize. The good guys all know who we are
