Question about PSA grading.............

I've been submitting cards to PSA for more than a year (and buying pregraded ones for much longer) and would like to know if PSA will respond to questioning the grade on a particular card? Not just a common card, but a very rare one. I'm not complaining or anything. I'm very pleased with the grades I've gotten from PSA. I collected comics for more than 20 years and was always a picky customer and tough grader so I normally, on average, get back better grades than what I expect. I think I read something about a customer requesting a reason for a grade on a particular card received back from grading. I know tiny wrinkles drop the grade down to at least a PSA 5 normally, but what if you get a card back 2 or 3 grades below what you expect and you just can't see a reason why, even after you have viewed it again and again with a loop?

Thanks for any help with PSA's guidelines and experiences,

Peter

This following thought is NOT coming from experience ......

I don't think PSA will give you a specific reason for any grade on a particular card. From what I have read and heard from others is if you are completely not satisfied with a grade, crack it out and re-submit.

    ISO 1978 Topps Baseball in NM-MT High Grade Raw 3, 100, 103, 302, 347, 376, 416, 466, 481, 487, 509, 534, 540, 554, 579, 580, 622, 642, 673, 724__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ISO 1978 O-Pee-Chee in NM-MT High Grade Raw12, 21, 29, 38, 49, 65, 69, 73, 74, 81, 95, 100, 104, 110, 115, 122, 132, 133, 135, 140, 142, 151, 153, 155, 160, 161, 167, 168, 172, 179, 181, 196, 200, 204, 210, 224, 231, 240

  • If it's something rare, bring it to Joe O's attention. He'll ask you to submit the card for review, but at least you'll get feedback from the boss himself.

Is there any type of paper loss/disturbance? This is a sure-fire way to bring the grade down well below what you expected. Here is an example of paper disturbance. There is no paper loss, but if you notice on the back of the card on the left, you'll see where paper has been disturbed. I had expected a PSA 5.

  • On my first submission, I sent in a 1970 and 1971 Johnny Bench. The 71 came back as "evid of trim" and the 1970 got a 6. When I finally received the cards, the 71 was in a holder (1970 Topps) and the 70 in cardboard, with the sticker reading 71 topps, evid of trim. I called PSA regarding the mixup (wrong holders) but then questioned which card should be labeled as trimmed-I still had to deal with the person I bought the card from so I needed to know who to go after.
As it turns out, the 71 was the 6 and the 70 was trimmed, shorter than a regular card. I asked how they knew which was trimmed and the basic answer was: card shorter than normal, different cutting pattern (edge) compared to the others. I still have that 70 Bench if anyone wants to submit to PRO. It's almost guaranteed to be a 10! image

If you bring your card to a show where they're doing on-site grading, they can give you an opinion as to why something was downgraded. If it's a really significant card then you can probably get more detail without having to wait for that. You can always give them a call and see what answer you get. And if you don't like it, call again the next day.

Like Helionaut said - you are the customer. Call them....if you think there is an error and the card is misgraded...especially if it is of a fair value. I called once on a card, and was told I could re-submit it and speak with the individual who graded it originally for clarification. This, of course, was for the re-submit fee. I decided it wasn't worth it. You can push it though. What's the worst that could happen? Again - you are the customer. Make the seller give you the answer. Regards.

  • Thank you for all you great replies. You members make this message board a great place for communication. I appreciate the help.

Playball : A special thanks to your information and sharing. I collect vintage golf cards and often the cards I want are stuck in an albums and as a result there ends up being some type of damage. You example is a great help. I've wondered to what extent PSA would take off for certain types of damage.

Cardfan07 : Sorry to hear about the Bench card and mixup. Johnny was one of my favorite players and the Reds were something to behold in the 70s. I've sent some later cards in that I personally pulled from packs and they came back evidence of trimming. But being fair to PSA, when I later examined the cards they were a hair smaller than they should have been. I have to so though, PSA has always done a great job with my cards.

Helionaut and DirtyHarry : Great advise. I think it would be great to have cards graded at a show and have the chance to ask questions.

softparade and Fabfrank : Thanks for your advice. It's always good to hear from others with more experience.

    Thanks for all the help.
