Need help from Roosevelt variety guys

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just found a nice 70D DDR. I see 3 DDR varieties listed on the CONECA site, but to this day I can not figure out the rarity of the listed varieties based on their pop #'s. The coin does not appear to match any of their markers. Does anyone have any idea which variety this is or if it has enough value to preserve in a slab? It is a decent grade unc coin 64-5ish. Thanks in advance.

how can you be sure it is not just 'machine doubling' ? and actually a double die?

usually a larger area is involved with DD's

Usually seeing split serifs (like on this example) are a givaway that it is true doubling and not machine doubling. Machine doubling is when the die bounces after the strike, usually leaving a shelf like appearance to the design. This may be an example of Master die doubling, I just do not know the Roosevelt series well enough to know, thats why I am asking some of the Roosevelt people here. As far as a larger area being involved- that depends on the amount of doubling on that particular doubled die. Some doubling is miniscule on some pieces while other doubled coinage is major.

Did you find it in a Mint set? Looks like it may be 1-R-V. Kind of common and not worth the cost of slabbing as an MS65 is worth maybe $15-$20.

I am not really sure where I got it from, I put together this Dansco set maybe 20 years ago and I pulled coins from sets, slabs and raw pieces. Thanks for the info koynekwest, I guess I will just put it back in its spot.
