Interesting Lincoln Error

After shoveling all the snow here in PA today I needed a bit of a distraction so I started looking through a bunch of change that I had accumlated over the past year. During my sort I came across this 1978d Lincoln that has an interesting error. This coin is in terrible shape.

Anyone seen an error like this one?

    good one.
    whats the reverse look like
  • Kinda looks like two or more coins were struck together. After minting of course.

Careful about this one. The picture too indistinct for me to see well enough, but similar errors can be made post production by placing a second coin reverse down on the face of the first obverse and striking the top coin with a heavy weight, like a sledge hammer. Are the columns of the Lincoln Memorial raised (heavily clashed die) or incuse (from striking with another coin)?
    Wisconsin nationals: gotta love 'em....
  • It looks like they are incuse. So that means that this is not a mint error. This is actually the first time I have seen something like this. Thanks all for your replies!

Definitely not an error, no question about it. It's a hammer job.

  • Agree with the others. Cam, are you thinking of "Lincoln in jail" or similar term? image
