Lincoln Die Cap Error ... Real or Fake?

Something just doesn't look right on this error.
Link

It looks fake to me.How can it have an obverse and reverse on 1 side? The Cap die would be striking a blank planchet,so wouldn't it have the reverse on BOTH sides?I am not familiar with this
type of error,So I could be wrong.Need input from my fellow board members.image

I am surprised that they are not more expensive.I don't think that with the new equipment you will see them escaping from the mint.
    Thanks for the feedback everyone!

100% real. I love that coin. Can't spend $500.00 on it though. image Good luck if you persue it.

It's a genune error. Most likely it is the bottom member of a "nested pair". The obverse was struck by an obverse die cap bearing the raised reverse design. It struck a planchet that was partly confined by the collar and then it stuck to the latter. The two temporarily conjoined coins were struck several more times before being ejected, raising the high, vertical wall you see here.

The floor of such "cups" can carry an incuse, mirror image reverse design (brockage) as seen here, can be featureless, can carry a counterbrockage, or may contain something even more complex. It all depends on whether the top coin started out as a normal coin or an error coin.

A "jailhouse" cent, Lincoln behind bars. That's a nice cap. It stayed in the cooker a little longer than mine.

  • I pulled 400 jailhouse Lincolns out of a mint bag of 1995 cents, sold every darn one of them back then. Neat coin.

Back to the thread: That is a great die cap.

The term "jailhouse Lincoln cent" refers specifically to strong die clashes, not brockages and die caps.
