1921-P VAM-39? Dot on Left Wing (many pictures)

Hey ddbird, remember that coin you mention in your thread? It came today. Kind of.
This was the one with the suspected die gouge through OF on the reverse. We exchanged private messages. I BIN'd it for too much money. The delivery came today, but sorry to say... it was a different coin. You'll never know what you spotted.

However, check out the coin that was sent. It's not an MS63. I can't grade, but it has over a half dozen dings on the obverse.

I think it's a VAM-39. It has a large dot on the left wing. I couldn't find a picture of one anywhere. Where is the dot supposed to be? This one is pretty large.

It also has a double profile near the lips and nose.
There are three wiggly lines coming from eye.
LIBERTY is doubled on top.
Die chip in cap.
Cracks all over obverse.
There are several die gouges or heavy polishing lines on the reverse.
Tiny dot on one of the legs.

That's not all. I saw a HUGE scrape on the reverse. I checked it out under a microscope. It looks like the planchet had some lamination problems, the coin got struck, and then part of it peeled off.
There is a piece rolled back on the eagle's neck. You can see the die impression in the area that is scraped. If it was scratched, the area would be flat or grooved... and not show the design of the eagle's neck, right?
Does anyone think it's post mint damage?

Remember it's not how you pick your nose that matters, it's where you put the boogers.

OK, now let me get this straight.....not only would he not send close ups of the "die gouge" he sends a different coin. That explains why he wouldn't send the close up, he didn't have that coin, he was using it as a stock photo. If you wouldn't mind sharing the auction link, I would love to know who the seller is to avoid his auctions.

You got a cool coin though, so it wasn't a total lose, and it looks like you had fun looking at itimage

  • Here's the item link. I think the price was very high, but I was hoping for the coin with the die gouge. I like the coin that was sent instead, just get frustrated with non-disclosed stock photos. Plus, at $4.50 for S&H, I expected more than a white business envelope. A little packing material or bubble wrap would have been nice.
That dot on the wing looks very large and raised compared to other dotted VAMs I've seen. Who knows. I need to find a photo of a VAM-39.
  • I got a different coin than what was pictured in my first purchase, but I found the same die crack in another item. It's another 1921-P with a crack through S OF.
