Quick question...Canadian proof coin

Do Canadian coins have a "P" on them if they are proof?
I got a roll of Jeffersons from my bank and there was a 2001 SHINY canadian nickel in there. It has "P" on it.

I'm guessing proof, but not sure.

Should I just give it to my canadian friends to spend?

  • P means it is plated steel, as opposed the the solid nickel that was the standard before 1999.

It is given to coins going to Americans... It stands for PISS OFF!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Thanks, (except for Ms Marty image ).
It was just sooooo shiny (like US proofs/cam/dcam coins).

Canadian coins tend to have mirrored surfaces because they are struck with chrome-plated dies. There are "brilliant uncirculated" (similar to our special mint set) coins with P's on them from 1999 on. These are better overall from the circulation strikes, but even the circulation strikes are bright and shiny.
