I got an email late last night from my local dealer. He just bought 900 Morgan and Peace dollars. The morgans were all 1921-P/D/S and the Peace dollars were of various dates.

I went to the shop this morning and spent 4 hours looking through all the dollars. Here are the coins I came away with. image I am very excited.

Thank you for taking the time to look. image Richard.

Morgan Dollars
1) 1921-P VAM 3A3 R6 according to the VAM updates.
2) 1921-P VAM 1A Hot 50
3) 1921-P VAM 1F Hot 50
4) 1921-P Unable to attribute, but has nice sized die break of the 3rd left star.
5) 1921-P Unable to attribute, but has very nice die break from the top of the second A in AMERICA to the denticles.
6) 1921-D VAM 1AH Fun with 21.
7) 1921-D VAM 3A Very happy with this find. Fun with 21.
All the Morgans grade AU between 53 to 58.

Peace Dollars, all XF to AU except number 7-->All Top 50s
1) 1922-P VAM 1A Top 50

This coin is not listed above, but I found it last week. Note the large die cracks and the break in the denticles above U in UNITED. Any ideas?

That 1925 'Missing Ray' in MS is a nice coin. Looks like some good stuff!

    Richard:

Very nice. What a great thing, email saying 'come in and look at 900 coins.' Seems like you had an excelletn day.

Very, very nice. What a dream score, 900 unattributed coins to search through.

Please post photos of any 21-P or 21-D coins you cannot vam.

The best part about this collection was the person who brought them in inherited them from his dead grandfather. The coins were in a canvas bag. The person who sold them said his grandfather just died a few weeks ago and said the other five grandchildren each got one bag! The coin shop owners told him to tell the others that they would buy theirs, too. I am hoping they do sell them! Boy will I be in coin heaven. image

So, in my opinion, if there are five more bags like this one and all were unsearched for these things, think of what can be in them. The VAM thing was not an issue all them years ago I guess.

Anyway......Jack, I will try to post pics of the important parts tonight.

    Thanks all for the replies.

    Richard.

Pictures added. Sorry for the last two that are kinda blurry. I wanted to get as close as I could with the scanner, but the items of interest show pretty well.

That must have been a blast! Nothing gets my adrenaline going like looking through a big pile of old coins that haven't been picked over for varieties.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Kranky, It was awesome. I could tell once I dug into it that it was just setting in a basement or safe somewhere for decades. I really hope the shop owners get a chance to buy the other bags.
  • Thanks for sharing. How about some of the Peace dollar VAM's? Would like to see a few of those too.

Coin 5 is a VAM 32A. I just found one last week myselfimage

I went to my coin shop and spent 2 hours looking for VAMs too, but the owner of the shop collects VAMsimage, so I was told they were all in a box in the back. (Didn't find out until after I spent 2 hours looking) I did find one though, so it wasn't all bad. I bought some nice Darkside instead.

That is so cool that he lets you do that, you are a very lucky guy. And I believe that you deserve a heartfelt YOU SUCK from your fellow vammersimage

CoastGuard, I will post the VAM 5 of the 1925-P Peace dollar later tonight. That is the only one that will show up nicely with a scanner. I will try doing the die gouges, but will not promise.

Becky, You are correct, it appears. I looked all up and down on the VAM update and just could not find it. Then when you said 32A, I looked at 32A and there it was. Thank you for the attribution. image And, thank you for the "YOU SUCK". image
  • Becky beat me to it.

Here is the one I found in an antique shop a few month back
