GOETZ: K-552 Flight of the Condor

K-552 FIRST NON-STOP FLIGHT OF THE AIRPLANE CONDOR, 1938, Cast AE, 97mm, Edge-punch “KgoeTz”, RRR, Choice AU.

Commemorating the flight of August 12-14, 1938. Obverse shows Condor over the Atlantic ocean with the rim inscription “Berlin-New York in 25 hours, New York-Berlin 20 hours. Reverse shows an angel inscribing the names of the crew, “A.Henke, P.v.Moreau, W.Kober, P. Dierberg.” on a tablet with the rim inscription “First non-stop flight of the Condor.” and dates.

Note swastika at bottom of obverse, but no Goetz signature...perhaps a hidden protest?

  • I agree, a nice peice of history. People have a tendancy to focus on what the Nazi's did during WWII and not look at what the accomplished prior to the war.

It would have been definately cool to have had a conversation with Goetz himself on his political views.

How many of these image medals did Goetz produce in his lifetime?

Goetz produced approximately 760 medals and patterns. I currently have 200 of them...

Follow up question, if I may,
What time frame did he do all his work?

Hmmm, I wonder ... when did Goetz start switching to the edge punch for his signature? After the Putsch medal?

He never really did...there are a few medals, this being one of them, that have no signature on either the obv or rev but have an edge-punch. Others have both or a sig and no edge punch. There really is no rhyme or reason as to his preferences. He did "sign" other Third Reich medals that were designed with swastikas...

While I'm at it, I found a mother-lode in Germany of large, rare, and beautiful medals from an old collection. I just ordered 25 of them which include most of the Goetz Family medals including K-510 self portrait at 60 which is used as the icon on the Kienast book cover. I should receive and have these imaged in the next several weeks. image

Glad to see you're keeping yourself busy! image

When I was a kid I built a plastic model of the wartime version of the Condor. I can't remember the designation but it was an interesting plane and oddly enough I got into building passenger planes that had wartime lives for a couple of years.
