Absolutely no question about it, it's an altered 1944D cent. Genuine 1914D cents don't have that same kind of relief, the date is spaced wrong on that coin, and genuine 1914D cents don't have designer's initials under the bust - that didn't start until 1918.

Obviously an altered '44-D. Truth be told, I'm sometimes tempted to get a coin like this to display in my album because I don't want to crack my PCGS AU-50 '14-D out of its holder. I'll probably eventually get an F-12 genuine coin to crack out and display because I don't like the thought of altered coins in my album, though.

This is a real 1914-D------- This is an altered 1944-D

....

Please note the space between the 9 and the 1 of the date on each coin.
