I sent this coin ANACS MS65 1938-D/S into PCGS for my free quarterly submission enclosed in the ANACS holder. I think I did good!

Very cool. And, that's even the pricey one! (Compared to the D/D, anyway).

Out of the maybe 10 total anacs coins I've crossed over (All 19th century), 6 of them have upgraded, one by two grades.

I put down minimun grade of MS60 because I wanted to make sure it crossed, I guess I didn't need to worry. I've done okay on crossovers, but this is one of the better crosses!

  • In the limited crossovers I've done I've seen:

    NGC: 6/6 same grade
    ANACS: 2 upgrade/2 same grade/3 downgrade

    CONGRATS!!!

Last mail-in crossover batch I did:
5 out of 6 on ANACS Morgans
2 out of 7 on NGC Ikes

FUN show 0 for 4 on NGC Ikes!

    First and foremost -- congrats!!!

Maybe you can help me...I must be doing something wrong image

I wonder, as I don't know, if it matters what coins get sent in...and in what holder they're in. I've only tried to cross NGC Merc's and I've only sent in one at a time (in the past).

Out of all my attempts, I've only had 1 cross...some that didn't cross I sold (a shame as the PCGS versions I wound up buying weren't as nice) and others I've cracked open, resubmitted again "raw" and received the proper grade.

Here's the other data point -- I've never sent in common coins for crossing...mostly key/tough ones.

I refuse to allow them to downgrade a coin if it doesn't deserve it so I always put a min grade on the submission form.

My question is -- is it hard for them to grade a small coin in the NGC holder so they put just DNC?? Are they stricter on key date coins?? Do they figure that it's a key date coin and you'll resubmit it again, so they DNC and figure they'll likely take another look at it anyway?

I can't figure it out -- I buy raw coins and send in for grading and get proper grades...I send in undegraded PCGS coins and get them upgraded -- both of these happening more than 80% of the time for me. I've sent in 8, or so, NGC coins and have had 1 cross (cracked 2 of those that DNC...got the initial/prior/proper grade).

Any thoughts?? I'm a bit lost. I like to buy nice coins (and will sometimes buy NGC holder coins) but when I buy the pricey ones I'm just a bit leary to crack them out...I sholdn't have to...they should cross the first time, no?

Am I a bit too utopian about this image
