Ebay related- Do I leave this guy a Negative??

I won an inexpensive raw lot from hazardjr on fleabay, sent payment. Today I recieve this letter via snail mail w/ my voided check:
"I am sorry (and embarrassed) to tell you that this coin is missing from our inventory. It may have been sold or just 'missing'. I am returning your check. If it turns up, I will send it to you N/C."

I am ashamed of myself for bidding on a raw coin from a guy with a slightly shady feedback rating. But that fact aside, do I buy this seller's story?

legit or crock? what would you do?

I'd let it slide and not bid on his auctions again.
  • $20..... I'd let it go!

I think even is a good thing.

You can leave him a neutral or negative if you don't mind having a retaliation neg in return. (Never take a neutral to a negative fight though)

Let it slide. No harm, no foul. Indeed, I think I'd even give him a light positive, if he left one for me first image.

Was the coin a potential rip? Or, about what it was worth?

I got the same story from a seller a while back when I ripped a coin for about 1/10th of what it was worth and made the mistake of posting about it here before I had it in hand. I didn't believe it for a second.

I had this happen also on a coin that was really wanted. Got pissed but what else can you do ?

  • I'm a trusting guy. I would be fine with getting my money back and would leave positive feedback once I did get it back. I didn't even think the seller might be avoiding a rip as Russ suggests. So, was it a rip?
  • Save the letter, watch his auctions to see if he relists it.

  • I can't say wether or not it was a rip, not having seen the coin in hand. It was coin worth $20 as a MS64 and $80 as a MS65.
I won the auction for 20-something... so not really what I would term a "rip".

All are good comments guys, thanks. I especially like Glenns last comment about keeping me eyes open for a relisting.

  • I wouldn't neg someone for this - but I would be careful about bidding
on his stuff in the future.

Ditto. Don't leave any feedback, and if he re-lists the coin, nail him!!!

Now, if the seller lurks on this forum, that coin won't see the light of day for several years!! image

If you sent a personal check he now potentially has your account number and signature. Or at least copies of each. FYI.
  • I'd let it go ..

I know how frustrating it is. A few years ago I won a Superior Auction. I paid for the coin and then I get this email that they were sorry but the coin was supposed to have been removed from the auction because it was already sold ... At some point I would have thought they could have noticed their error and contacted me before I was awarded the winning bid and invoiced and payed ... BUT .. NO ... Their incompetance cost them ...

I HAVE NOT bid on a Superior Auction since ...

It was a $2,000+ coin ... I really wanted it ... Since then I've bought in excess of $300,000 in coins & currency from other major auction houses. That's over $45,000 in fees they have lost out on getting a portion of. Couple that with the hundreds of thousands in potential consignments ... I DON'T even look at their auctions anymore ...
  • If you believe him, I'd say let it go. I reserve a neg. for a truly horrible experience. His email was at least polite, even if not true.

His excuse sounds legitimate. It can be easy to misplace something as small as a coin. Especially in a home with children running around and such. It's careless, but not a severely punishable offense.
He showed his true self with the return of your check and his apology.

I was the seller in a similar situation recently. I sold a low-value (under $20) coin on eBay, and when the time came to ship I couldn't find it anywhere. All of the stuff Ihave active on eBay is kept in a single wooden box, but this coin wasn't in there. Turns out my wife had "straightened up" the office, dropped the box, and put the coin God-knows-where (I still haven't found it).

I wrote the winner a couple of times as I searched, and eventually sent a postal money order refunding his full bid plus $.37 for his stamp, and I threw in a 2001-P Sacagawea dollar I got in change from the post office. The bidder was completely understanding and even left me a positive feedback for the (non-)transaction.
