I found this auction listed at eBay for a George Washington "Peace and Friendship Medal" dated 1789. The only problem is that the design hadn't been..................designed yet!!! Cunningly, the seller stops short of saying this medal was made in 1789 as it's dated, but he does give the impression that it was used by the Washington administration and given to the American Indians as an symbol of friendship, honor.

A little research tells us that the medals were struck from 1903-1970 by the U.S. Mint with modern dies in silver and yellow bronze. They have been available since 1970 in copper with some design changes. My guess is that someone thinks they're gonna win a medal struck in 1789 when in fact they'll be winning a $25-$50 medal from the 1900's.

Let's play Fleece the Flock!!!!

The seller might've not known any better himself.

In the 1972 catalog Medals of the United States the Mint lists these for sale at five dollars. They are on the very first page of the catalog as Medal #101 size 3

In case you are interested the obverse die was by Pierre Simon Duvivier and the reverse by John Reich.

At this time they were produced in bronze and it is unfortunate that all the medals for sale in the Mint catalog do not contain the word copy anywhere on the earlier pieces.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
