Received: 1878-CC PCGS MS-64 PL Morgan Dollar -- New Photos -- How Do You Like Her ??

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here's a new 1878-CC PCGS MS-64 PL Morgan Dollar that I purchased this evening at auction. These are the original seller's photos since I have not yet received the coin. This coin gets very pricey in grades above this...

It appears to be nicely toned with a relatively clean cheek. I'll post an update to this thread after receiving and examining the coin in hand.
What do you think of her based on what detail you can see in these photos?

Even though I don't collect Morgan dollars but I do have some. I collect seated half dollars. I think that PL and DMPL morgans are awesome looking. I have to say thats a nice looking 1878-CC PCGS MS-64 PL Morgan Dollar you have there.

Bear, Brian, RV Davis and CoinJP: Thanks very much for your kind words about my new 1878-CC PCGS MS-64 PL Morgan Dollar.

I've been searching for about 6 months for that "just right" 1878-CC in PCGS MS-64, with the right combination of look and price to suit my collecting preferences. I sold a slightly weakly struck reverese NGC MS-64 PL about 5-6 months ago, with the intent of replacing her with a PCGS version for my PL/DMPL Morgan Dollar Registry Set.

This coin seems to fit the bill, and was almost a commercial even exchange for the other coin. I am very pleased based upon the original seller's auction photos, and will post an update to this thread when I receive the coin in hand, and can examine her more closely in person.

  • That's a very high-end example of the date--plus it looks undipped which is rare for a PL Morgan. Actually the obverse almost looks DMPL to me, with the slight graininess of the rev. holding it back from DM. Considering the giant price incease to the next level, the fact that they tend to grade the date 1/2 point low in comparison to other CC's (ie. '85CC), and the originality--Looks like a real keeper!! Nice photos too. image

Stuart, your 78 CC looks more like a PL than the 79 S I posted earlier. IMO your looks border line DMPL. Nice coin BTW. image

I agree that the coin has a nice light brown skin indicating that it has not recently been dipped. It has a nice original look to it that I like. image
