Help me grade this shield nickel...

please....

btw, it came in a slab. I want to see if it grades close enough so I can learn how to grade shield nickels. I don't want to have to rely on TPG's to grade them for me. I am trying to put together a set in AU grades.

I love those rays! Looks like it's got a pretty cool die crack as well. Dunno bout the grade though.

The picture ain't big enough or clear enough to see any rub on it, but based on the assumption that it's MS and not a slider, I'll guess MS63.

Edit: since I just read the part where you mentioned you're doing an AU set, I'm assuming this IS a slider. If so, it's a helluva nice one. Looks AU58 to me, in that case.

  • I think I see rub on the 5 and bottom edge of the shield. AU-58.

  • Yes, there is a rub on the bottom of the shield. This is the best I have been able to get with my camera so far.

The coin is graded AU-58 by ANACS. I didn't think an older coin like this would be overgraded by them, but I don't have any personal history in owning coins slabbed by ANACS. I just know them by the stories I hear on the forum and other collectors.

Hopefully, looking at these graded slabs, I can get an idea of how to grade the shield nickles (shickles!?). I don't want to have to buy them all slabbed if I don't have to.

I really love all the die cracks and varieties this series has.

    Thank you!!

I had an ANACS MS61 that didn't look that nice.

Probably AU-58, IMO. Nice die crack!

i guessed au-55 before looking at the grade. but at au-58, there's not much to quibble about. great coin! and a totally, horribly underappreciated series.
