EF. The word "Extremely" does not begin with an "X".

But either one is acceptable, of course, due to common usage. (Sort of like the way most folks call "Winged Liberty" dimes by the technically-incorrect but far more commonly-used name "Mercuries", y'know.)

Isn't that what "EF40" and "EF45" (or, if you prefer, "XF40" and "XF45") are for?

You're missing the necessary "who cares?" option.
I may use both depending on my mood.
I certainly understand both and it doesn't confuse me.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Most English abreviations use the first letter so Very Fine (VF) and Extra Fine (EF). Some dealers used to tell sellers that EF stood for very fine, the "E" standing for the the second letter in vEry. Of course they then sold the VF sold coins as XF (eXtra fine) and the coins in their booth were so labeled. Bad English for fun and profit!image

EF. The word "Extremely" does not begin with an "X".

neither does Christmas, Christmas tree, pedestrian crossing, railroad crossing, but i digress.

i actually think that what we have here is rather symptomatic of the American "English" language, but it's probably to late to change now. using an "E" in front of the "X" is rather redundant since it serves no phonetic purpose that isn't satisfied by the letter "X" whenever it's pronounced. if every word in the dictionary that starts as ex______ was shortened to just x_______, would we know the difference or suffer?? i doubt it.

and while i'm at it, here's another mental hotfoot of mine----------why do we need the letter "C" in the alphabet?? it's either an imposter masquerading as an "S" or a "K" or else it has to be in the company of another letter like an "H" in order to be useful. GEEZ, talk about a dysfunctional letter!!!!!! what i propose is that the "S" always be used for that sound and "K" always be used for that sound with no accompanying "C" anywhere in the neighborhood. the letter "C" gets to hang with the other 25 letters but shall hereforewith be used in place of the "CH" sound so that the "H" can go it's own way without the tagalong!! that will also shorten spelling considerably, giving us neat and economical words like curc, which is a place with a steeple and a bell where priests hang out.

OK, i feel better now. and BTW, i voted for XF!!!!image
