OT: But still coin related. I've been losing interest in "coin collecting", not "coi

As some of you might have noticed im not on here too often. The two main reasons are im losing interest in coin collecting and im trying to cut back on computer time to up my grades. The latter hasn't been working too well.image
I don't think im getting out of coins, but will be taking an absence from "collecting." With the way my life is going right now. I need to save and spend my money very wisely. I've also noticed that I don't have as much time anymore to collect. I've got school, school work, driving, driving school, football, chess team, chess club, and music that I need to work on. Not to mention countless family chores to attend to. And there's friend that I really want to be with. I've made more this year.image
So basically to make complaining and ranting short I will say that im going to not be collecting, for now. Just reading and studying when I can, and talking with my friends and buddies on here. I've always enjoyed conversation on these boards. I really have. You guys make the hobby even more fun. I think it comes down to this though. Right now, I can't lie to myself and say that I was happy I spend "x" amount of dollars on coin "y."
And I will say that I will not be buying so please do not PM or email me that you want to sell me anything. I will continue to sell on Ebay.(Which i've had an absence of for quite some time now) Only keeping my few cwt's.
I don't think I missed anything.image

I dropped out of numismatics from age 18 (my senior year in high school) until age 25 or so (about the time my firstborn came along). During that hiatus, I kept only three coins that had sentimental value to me from my early collecting days.

You'll be active again one day, perhaps. I still go through successive waves of active and inactive periods.

  • This is exactly why most coin collectors are relly young kids and those of us of "a certain age"..life just starts to take charge until some semblance of financial stability settles in...

I dropped out of coin collecting when I was 16. I'm glad I waited a while to come back because the little I had was stolen when burglars broke into my apartment and made off with my Japanese 1 mon coins (probably Bunkyu or thereabouts). Don't let a hobby keep you from doing what you need to do, but make sure to come back when you have the time.

I'm in the same way to some extent. I'm kind of taking a step back for a while and just enjoy what I have except for some impending deals and the submissions I've got. I think taking time away from coins can be a good thing now and then.

The coins will always be there. I took a ten-year or so break at that age, too. Much more exciting things to do image
  • Scott, I think you are making a wise decision. I wish you the all the best. Sounds like you've got plenty of good things going your way. I stopped coin collecting in the late 1980s and didn't resume collecting until 1999.

    Anyway, God Bless!!!

I have a plan for you! Just cut out these things: football, chess team, chess club, and music. Get rid of your friends and then you're set
    for plenty of coin collecting!

Just kidding! image Good luck & take care of things. Coins will always be waiting for you. image

  • It is a law of Nature that you'll return to coins in the future. Might I suggest you set aside 3 or 4 key date coins in several series at the $400-$600 level, and put them in a safe place for 15 years? I suspect you will be happy you did one day!!

That sounds like what happened to me. Unfortunately I sold my prized half cent which was a gift. I wish I had it now!

Doing well in school is the most important thing you could do. You are only in HS once. Make the most of it.

I was the tsar of my high school's coin collecting club until 1977, and didn't return again until graduate school in 1986. Like Mark, I dropped out again in 1988 only to return from late 1999 to the present. Make the most of high school and college. We hope your experiences will make you a wiser collector when you return.

I collected from age 9 to about 14. After that, my time and money went toward other, more exciting things.

Got back into coins after age 30.

You have made a very wise decision, as I'm sure you have noticed many collectors here did the same thing at about the same age! You will be back, and in the meantime enjoy your time! You only get to be that age once, coins will always be around!

Very common to take a break from "collecting" at your age...as if you couldn't see that already from the prior replies. My break was 10 years (age 19-29). I kept one coin; and still have it.

If you can find the time and have the desire, use your "time off" to expand your knowledge and keep an eye out for what's changing in the numismatic world. By the time I returned to collecting I had accumulated over two shelves of numismatic books that I did not own when I stopped collecting.

The best part of the time off from my point of view was there was no long, slow buildup to being able to afford the "good stuff" that I drooled over as a kid: My "round 1" keeper coin was a PCGS MS64 1938-D Buffalo Nickel...my "round 2" first purchase was a PCGS AU55 1856 Seated Dollar. image

  • Thanks a lot everyone. Thanks for your words of wisdom. I do think I will be back in to collecting five or ten years from now. But i'll still show up every once and awhile when I have free time to say hi or just learn something new. It's been fun. "I'll be back".image
