Okay, I think I may have a decent pic now!

Bear with me, I know it looks bad, but as I posted earlier, I couldn't get any to work, so this is a good one for me! Any thoughts on the coin?

  • Another question about this coin, I saw on the PCGS link that there are different 63s, how would I know if this one was a FL or any other coins? Like, I've noticed when I look up some of my other coins they will have the listings for other designs.

  • FL stands for Full Bell Lines (FBL) and I don't think this coin has them.

  • You know, after looking at some stuff, if that means that you can read the words (Pass and Stow) on the bell, this one actually does have it.

Here is what PCGS says is FBL:

    Full Bell Lines

Term applied to Franklin half dollars when the lower sets of bell lines are complete (FBL). Very slight disturbance of several lines is acceptable.

It is a $4-$5 coin. If you like it thats whats important. If your really interested in learning, buy a copy of the most recent edition of 'A Guide Book of United States Coins' by R.S. Yeoman. The 2005 edition is out. Or better yet...if you beg hard enough, maybe a forum member like Cam will send you last years edition for free. That book, referred to by collectors as the 'Red Book' (due to its color as you'll soon see) is the beginners bible for learning and unlike some other coin books...is actually quite interesting, well laid out, and now even has color photographs of many coins discussed. Good luck and go get 'em.

The main point is, your pictures are good, you've got it.

  • Oh, I never expected any of my stuff to be worth anything great...I'm just curious. I got it and some others from an ebay lot auction (suncoins) and was just wondering if I got anything good. But thanks everyone for giving me some help!

  • This one actually does have that...it's impossible to tell b/c of the pic (it's a scan), but it's up there.

  • Sometimes you'll see frankies that are almost full bell lines. PCGS says that a slight incompletness away from the crack of the bell still exhibits being full bell line. Your slight and my slight may be 2 different things. What I do ( which is conservative) is , if the bell line is not right up to the the crack of the bell , then its not FBL. I have not seen what PCGS calls slight so I do what I do till that time comes. Another thing to watch out for is the continuity of the lines. Scratches or dings that disrupt the lines will not get a FBL designation. Small scratches may be across the bell lines so long as the lines remain continuous.

My 52-d pics are alot better than that. Photobucket shrunk my images down so they got all weird. The "Pass and Stow" is alot more readable than that. But, they will do that job.
