I DID IT!!! a super centered 1989-90 Fleer Basketball Set

yeah i know i know....WHO CARES!!! But i love the 168 card set and considering the centering woes, rough cuts, diamond cuts and the easy chipping on the back....a full set of what i would grade 9-10 quality cards is still tough to do and a risk on ebay buying wax and rack packs. I literally had only 2-3 candidates out of 40 per player that were centered and or didnt have a rough cut or diamond cut....and then i had to evaluate those 3 to determine if any were mint!! Luckily at least 1 ended up being so per player. Diamond cuts were HORRIBLE!!! i literally had one whole box of wax that was MC to the bottom.....This set was came out the year i got interested in NBA basketball......and I l oved it from the late 80's to the early 90's until when MJ first retired. Today?? even with Lebron James playing for my former favorite cleveland cavs team I really can give a crap!!! at any rate.....

The stickers were no better.....i barely have a decent set...and they were given ONE PER PACK so i got alot of them...

At any rate.........i next wish to turn to the 1988 set...and i know there are quite a few of you out there who are interested in that set. Please email or PM me about the availability of commons/star card extras you may have. I think in the next few months I will be interested in putting together a nice raw nm-mt to mint well centered set. I currently have the Jordan graded psa 9 and a few commons i got from AJW. He is also selling me 2 sets of this set but centering was a concern for both of us...so I will let those who contact me know my wishlist

Those who have helped me out or will in the future, I have a 89 fleer basketball set with your name on it imageimage I will have quite a few extra sets...so let me know!!!

    Congratulations Ryan
That's a tough set! And, we do care...I get enjoyment out of sharing info and hearing what others are talking about.
How are your others sets going? Have you heard anything for next year?

Congrats! How about some scans of some of the best examples...and maybe some of the worst!
  • Congrats to you, I know I can never stop hearing about someone elses accomplishments. We all care because you care. This is a cool set. I want some pictures of it to. Thanks, Thibs

I know how tough this set is from collecting Magic johnson cards long before the advent of PSA. I have about 20 and none of them is a PSA 10 contender. I sent my best one and it came back a PSA 9. If you have a PSA 10 of Magic or Bird from this one let me know. I may be able to help you with some singles when you get a list together drop me a line...

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • Great work, Lothar. I think that finding strong 80's cards to try and submit for 9's and 10's isn't always as easy as some might think. For example, I broke a box of 1986 Topps baseball this week and I am still not convinced I have any HOF or star cards worthy of those grades. Anyway, congratulations on your great set!
  • I agree - WHO CARES !!!imageimageimage

anybody...1988-89 fleer basketball commons/semi stars/stars....AJW has sold me 2 complete sets which are on there way but im sure there will be some OC cards in the lot considering its the norm for this set. Please PM me or respond here if you have some nm-mt raw cards with decent centering.

    thanks!

  • I recently broke a box of it; very cool set!

The colation was excellent as always (2-4 of every card, 3 Jordans, 4 Jordan stickers). The centering was another matter.

Some seem to always be centered. The KJ rookie, Ewing, Bird, Pippen. Some are a nightmare, like the Stockton or Malone.

I doubt if any of the stars I got were PSA 10 worthy.

I agree! The stuff across the board from 86 to 89 is just horrible! You have everything from MC, OC, rough cut to Diamond cuts. I had to go thru a bunch of 87's just to find a few for a board member - this one I liked the best and definitely not a 10!

Still for the hoops guys, these are the great sets of the 80's.

  • Stone, that is a great card of a great player. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have regained a strong appreciation for the card sets of 86-89 in both basketball and baseball. One can go through many copies of these cards just to find nice ones with decent centering, no chipping, etc. for a nice raw set. I opened many packs of 1989-90 Fleer years ago and rarely found cards that were centered. Now I am inspired to try my luck with some 89-90 Fleer again. Thanks, Lothar!
