  • Michael S. Fey, Phd and Jeff Oxman's book "The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys" has a few photos and some added description to the VAM encyclopedia if your coin turns out to be a Top 100 VAM1A.

Without addition information and photos it's difficult to correctly attribute your coin. However, take a look at these descriptions and see if you coin has the following attributes:

    FROM THE VAM KEYS

    1886-O "E on Reverse"
VAM 1A Clashed Die Reverse PF:10

-"E" Clash Mark from "E" of Liberty on the Obverse Die
-Two clashes inside right wreath on Reverse
    -Seven clashes inside right wreath

Key Identifier: Dramatic clashed "E" under eagle's tailfeathers, to the left of the ribbon bow.
Comments: The VAM 1A is rare in strict BU condition, and can be found with either two or seven clashes on the Reverse.

The VAM encyclopedia indicates the obverse for a VAM-1A should be III (superscript 2) 1- Normal die of III (superscript 2) type with closed 6.

The Minor Design Type for III (superscript 2) Obverses (pg 103 in the 4th Edition VAM Encyclopedia) indicates with photos..."Long wheat leaf below R (Close to R with weak lines), short wheat leaf between leaf stalks, LIBERTY letters thinner with shorter serifs on B and R. Long lines between cotton bolls. Point of Liberty head neck between denticles)

The way you describe the Obverse it sounds like you have a very interesting coin. I and others might want to see some of your other photos.

The feature next to the eagle's left leg might be a clash as well. This area looks like it would be opposite the hair/cotton boll area of your coin. See if there are any details on the obverse that resembles this feature.

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!! image

Can you provide an image of the possible E below the tail feathers? This is sounding quite intersting!

  • thanks for input. have dr feys top 100 book coin DOES not have the 2-7 clashes on right wreath. only clashes on rev are on left wreath up to left wing. possible e is so light does not want to photograph with what i have available ( e is more of a ghost image if you know what i mean) only clashing on obv is above upper lip below nose and along nose bridge. have always thought it was the cotton bolls showing on rev. will work on better pictures of coin all features and repost

Don't see an a reverse clashed 'E' in the photos sorry. The Top 100 'E' clash is REALLY strong, and unmistakable.

Your coin is clashed, though...no doubt.
