To upgrade or not: Am I nuts?

Please read before answering. image

This hypothetical scenario occurs frequently. I have a perfectly acceptable XF-45 coin that I am completely satisfied with. A nicer AU-55 coin enters the picture. I have to decide whether to upgrade or not. Most of the time I do not. My rationale: I am happy with the coin I have. It is nice for its grade. The difference spent on the new, higher grade coin will not make me that much happier (if at all) and spending the difference might prevent me from purchasing another coin down the road. I guess I would be lousy at competing in a registry. image

  • You're right about the Registries. I have a semi-key that's totally original in VF-35 and I love. NGC gives me 3 points for the coin compared to a very, very common MS64 that gets 150. Heck with the upgrade game and the registries, it's nuts.

Is the extra money difference part of your coin budget?
If so, will you use it to buy another coin that you will enjoy?
If so, don't upgrade, get the extra coin, and enjoy both image

btw......I vote yes on "nuts" image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Yes.

What exactly would you get out of the upgrade?

The argument you presented seemed to be mostly negative, I can't see anything in their to make me even think of upgrading.

You may be nuts, but that's not related to the question... image

Is it part of a set or a "random" coin?
If part of a set (type or date), I like to have all the coins pretty much the same grade, whatever that grade is.
If a random coin that just grabbed you, for whatever reason, if you don't think the upgrade will make it more attractive to you, fuggedaboudit.

Don't let the registry lemmings influence your decision.
  • If you not competing in a registry, you shouldn't upgrade. The idea of collecting, IMO, was to aquire a complete set, no matter what the grades are.
I wonder what would have had happened, if TGC were never existed, or what the collectors did before the 80's, when there no TGC.
