Regrading cards...

Has anyone had experience in getting cards regraded to a higher level? For example, resubmitting a PSA 7 card and it comes back as a PSA 8?

The chances of this happening are pretty much zero. The folks who grade cards professionally are highly trained and very consistent, almost robot like in their methodology. The professional card graders usually spend quite a bit of time scrutinizing each and every card for the slightest flaw. They then consult with other graders and come to a scientific determination of a cards' grade. In all my years of dealing in graded cards, I've never heard of a single case where a person who was to resubmit a card and get the card back a grade higher or lower. It's just impossible. I mean, if it was possible for grades to vary upon resubmitting, that would make getting your cards professionally a joke and as you can see, professional card grading is thriving.

  • I guarantee if you got 50 cards graded, then cracked them out of the slab and had them regraded all 50 would not come back with the same grade.
  • I agree that there is NO way the chance is "almost zero". In borderline cases, i'm sure the cards can and do come back different grades. I'm also highly sceptical that even a majority of cards sent in are in fact "double checked" with another grader for consistancy. If this is so, than how do so many cards end up in the wrong case? I've sent in less than 15 cards and 2 came back in the wrong case (label card number does not match actual card number). So you think the double checking failed twice? On the SAME submission? I doubt it.

With the cost of grading a card at the 5 to 10 dollar level, there will be inconsistencies in the grading process.

Until submitters are willing to pay 20 to 30 dollars to have a single card graded,
there will be some cards that are over graded and some cards that are under graded.

People who don't understand business are baffled by this fact and continue to whine about inconsistency.

From my experience, if I go through and look at say 100 PSA 7's,
and pick out the 20 best for resubmission, about 10 of them will come back graded an 8.

So, my estimation is that about 10 % of PSA 7's can be 8's on another day.

  • Is there ever a way to have PSA explain how they came up with the grade? I've definitely seen a 7 and an 8 of the same card that I thought should be the other way around. Would there be a way to have someone at PSA justify their grades? If you say that 10% could be graded higher and you are dealing with a high volume of expensive cards, that can be a decent chunk of change.

Consider also the good day/bad day factor - does everyone come into work feeling the same way everyday? And what about sitting and grading for 8 hours? Does anyone think the consistency can be maintained over an 8 hour process? This will definitely factor into grading IMO.

Stone - no doubt there's a good day, bad day factor.
How about even a good hour, bad hour factor ?

Also, here's a fun exercise we can all try at home :

Get 20 of your raw cards, examine them under magnification,
under a good light, and note the grade you think each one should get.

Put them aside for a week or two,
and then grade them again without checking to see what you graded them the 1st time.

If you come up the same grade on better than 90 % of them, it's time to open up your own grading company. image

wolf, I think PRO started that way, but it quickly got too time-consuming to actually examine each card under a loupe. Much more efficient and profitable from a business point of view just to grade everything 9 Mint. Toss in some random 10's about 30% of the time to keep cutsomers happy and coming back, but not all 10's or somebody will be suspicious. If a card has an obvious flaw, like a huge crease or a magic marker mustache, give it an 8.
