How do you spot trimed and restored cards that still measure up in size?

I started to pay close attention to some of the cards I have bought from ebay and shows lately. I'm seeing some strange things with some of the cards. A 1970 OPC hockey card with a rough cut on one side and a sharp cut on the other. Is this common? Also the the size of some of the cards has varied. What is the tolerance that PSA will use for the size of cards before they are too large/small for grading? Some of the cards have quite a different size to them (mostly 1975 Topps Mini's). Well most of them looked perfect untill I measured them. I asked a guy at a local card show and he said "Most people never look at he size of the card, Unless they are buying expensive cards and compare them with others" I started to carry a cheap set of calipers and a jewlers loop now all I need to do is learn how to use them .
Also, What is the eazy way to spot cards that may have been restored? Example: Pressed/Compressed cards used to clean up small creases and corners that may be there but to the untrained eye might be overlooked. I stared to talk to a friend of mine who is a comic book collector and he said "Comic books have been restored for years now". NOW HOW ABOUT CARDS??? Have you heard of cards being restored?
Thanks Mrcardsniper
