1986 Topps invoice results - Schmidt PSA 10 - Scan Added

My grades for a 50 card 1986 Topps Baseball invoice got posted yesterday.

Here they are.

I won a vending case on ebay and these are all from that. Wow, these 86 Topps baseball cards are tough. Out of 50 cards I got just 1 ten, 26 nines, 21 eights, and 2 sevens. This is the first invoice in a long, long time that I was that far off from my expected grades. I was expecting grades a little more like my last invoice, considering that the cards were all carefully picked from a sealed case and examined numerous times with my loupe, just like all my previous submissions. The #1 Rose card, one of the two Ryans, and one of the two Clemens cards were the only ones that I felt weren't deserving of grades in the 9-10 range. The 11 #741 Rose cards were all beautiful and I thought a couple of tens were a lock, Oh well no such luck. It's a shame that it's really not worth resubmitting any of them as I'd bet a lot of bumps would be in order. I have no idea what happened on the sevens, I have to take a good look at them after they're delivered to me.

Anyway, enough ranting. It could've been much worse if it wasn't for the Schmidt 10. If I get them back by Thursday, I plan on running the Schmidt 10 up on ebay for ten days to end the following Sunday. I'm also planning on listing some of the dupes on Sunday for the standard seven days to end the same Sunday as the Schmidt 10. I'll post a scan of the Schmidt 10 here after I receive it from PSA.

Here's my email if anyone wants to contact me

congrats on the schmidt. i have some 86's as well that i sent in and i had no 10's on the submission (mostly 9's and a couple of 8's). this set is difficult. i have had better luck with rack packs than vending on the grades. also, nice grades on your first submission as well.

    Thanks,

Congrats on the 10! I'm sure it will do well on ebay. I know I've been looking long a hard for Trammell from that year that's worthy of a 10. Besides the black borders, the color registry and centering is all over the place on these cards.

The '86 are tough. I went through a rack pack case and submitted a handful on my last submission. I'm still waiting for the results but it would be interesting to compare. In my rack case, the Schmidt and Carew were routinely slightly O/C. Not sure if it was my case or if that is common.

Nice deal on the vending case itself - and I am sure the Schmidt 10 will pay for it alone.

    42 12065270 1986 TOPPS 747 RICK CERONE N/A 10

Before you think, "Wow, nice grades", keep in mind that I went through 4 rack boxes (over 4000) cards to get 3 common 10's. These are definately tough cards. 86's are great. I think I'm going to shoot for some more 10's in the future.

Why is it there are so many 86 Topps Traded Bonds in PSA 10 but the regular set is so difficult? Is it just the sheer number of submissions of this one card?

In your guys opinoin is it better to buy vending, rack, wax, or factory set? For your best shot at 10's in mid to late 80's cards.

as far as 81 and 86...i think rack, unless you run across a flawless vending box. i do have some 86 vending up this week as well. see auctions below if interested. thanks.

    Dave >>

    3 options to ponder:

    1) Percentage-wise, the Bonds card is no easier; it is just submitted more than other cards.
    2) The Traded fatctory sets contain better quality cards than the regular series wax and vending.
    3) Not all Bonds cards submitted are in the exact condition in which they were pulled from the sets

The Traded sets were also issued in boxes, providing a chance for better corners.

Nice pull on the schmidt one of the tougher ones. Now if you'd only part with a couple of those yank bk's I need.

As for the 86 tt the cardboard is two different natures. The traded are like two pieces of paper together where the 86's are one thin piece and love to chip.

Anyone interested I just posted a lot of 86's for a more than fair price. Less than grading.

    Thanks, Matt

In regards to the grades, it appears by the grades that you may be failing to magnify the corners with extra stock on them to verify that the whole corner is intact. Often with 86-88 topps, one corner will exhibit extra paper from "pulling" at the cut completion. While PSA's graders will react quite differently from table to table in assigning deductions (or no deductions) for this--virtually none of their staff will forgive enamel loss at a corner. I find the extra stock charming and uncirculated, PSA's opinion tends to vary based on who's looking at your invoice in both acknowledgement and degree.

As related to the 86 Traded Bonds:
I'm not certain what the population is. However, at a recent show in Chicago, I looked through a lot of sixty (60) PSA 10's to arrive at the copy I own. Nearly HALF of the 10's would have been graded as NM/MT by a grader who was on the ball with fresh eyes. In addition, I agree with Gator as the traded issue is absolutely NOTHING like the regular issue. They are completely different animals.

    jimtb,

Here's my Trammell. I do have another 10-quality Trammell for you. Nelson Simmons is absolutely impossible. I now have over 40 copies from racks and factory sets and the best I have is a 9pd--the orange!

I just added a link in my auction to the picture I temporarily added to my registry set. I was wondering if we're allowed to use these pictures from the set registry on ebay instead of using ebay's crappy picture services. I didn't see any mention that we cannot do that and I noticed that some have done it, but I was still wondering if we're really allowed to use PSA's site for web hosting in ebay. Can someone please reply here and let me know? Thanks.

<< <i>Yikes! I'm happy for you man, but that is an insane price for any 1986 card, PSA 10 or not... >>

The first one, which I received on one of my submissions, ended up at a net cost to me of essentially less than $0. I had about 2,500 1986 Topps Schmidt cards that cost me @$50, sent in seven or so, got one ten, and made the raw and submission fees back on the 9s I sold.

The second one, if I remember correctly, went for $175, give or take a few dollars.

Browntoni won this one - and there was obviously a snipe war at the end of this one. He used to have a very nice Schmidt collection, sold all or most of it, and seems to be rebuilding the Basic Set with a vengence...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
