What is an error coin worth anyway?

Posted this in another forum but maybe this is the better place for it.

How do you know what an error is worth?

I have several errors that I have accumulated over the years (from bags and rolls) and I put them aside figuring they were not worth my time or consideration.

One example that comes to mind is a 1963 Quarter that was clipped under the date. I would guess it to be a 5% clip with the top of the date visible and the Blakesley effect noticeable on the E in LIBERTY. The reverse has the "TES O" showing about half the detail and the "ER" in QUARTER showing the Blakesley effect.

The coin itself I would guess to be MS64.

Is this worth any more than silver melt? Is it worth enough to slab?

I can get images later if anyone is interested in what it looks like.

Here's a website with a lot of error info and error coins to check out:

The biggest problem with any price guide you find is that every error coin is unique, making it very difficult to make any sweeping statements about value. Many people have tried to come up with a definitive value guide, but every effort has been flawed in some way. The only answer that really fits is "whatever someone will pay for it".

The clipped 1963 quarter described in your post is probably a $5-10 coin, it's a relatively common date for clips but the high grade and silver content give it a little more appeal. A clip of the same size on a clad 1965 quarter is probably a $2-3 coin.

If you want to post some more of your error coins, I'll be happy to help with rarity and value estmiates. Depending on what you find, it could be very much worth your time.

Here's a site that deals primarily with errors if you'd like to see how they price. I go there to dream sometime.

Thanks, that does answer my question.

The error needs to be rare for the era or unusual to be worth any considerable amount.

I will cull through what I have but I do not believe I have anything of considerable value.
