Holy cow -- 1969 Bench sells for 2x SMR

This 1969 Johnny Bench PSA 8 just sold for $272.09 plus $10 shipping. That's double SMR value of $135. Centering is near perfect, in fact everything is just about perfect ... but geez Louise. I'm supposed to be the only one who pays too much for Bench cards! Me and Scott and Jeff and Ryan and ....

There is a very simple reason why it went for that much... because Legacy was selling it. I have noticed several cards they have auctioned, and it seems like every single time their cards go for a lot more than the average ebay price for the same card (in the same grade).

And anyone else who wants a really nice centered card I guess. This is what I have been noticing forever - a well centered card will bring out the bidders where a 60/40 will keep them at home. Just my take.

I was watching that one tonight - a nice card, but I was out after the price exceeded SMR. I think Mike is correct - the nice centering boosted the price (along with the seller).

I am also surprised. I know Bench's AS is a card that usually sells above SMR.

I know Legacy tends to generate confidence in bidders, and their examples are often high-end for the grade. I bought this card in PSA 9 from them last year, but 60/40 top to bottom. The winning bid was $455, a bit over $420 SMR. As Mike noted, 50/50 centering brings a premium and '69 is a tough year for perfect centering. Just ask Reggie collectors.

Still, double SMR surprised me on this one. Maybe there's some thought that it's close to 9 and could achieve such in a regrade. And just maybe, the buyer doesn't care what the number is on the flip... he bought the card, not the holder!

How true! I had a snipe bid of $165 on that and it didn't even show up on the radar screen. I agree that cards with great appeal will always go for a premium, and that's something "book value" never seems to take in account. I recall that a really nice '69 Bench PSA 9 that also had exceptional centering went for $974.05 in a Mile Auction last year.

I was watching a 52T PSA 7 common in the Legacy auction that was well centered - was prepared to go all the way to SMR!....at the point that I put my bid in for 90 bucks, it jumped to over 200! That's what a centered 52T will do - amazing.
So I will just have to: a. win the lottery or b. work 24 hrs a day to pay for my vice? Neither will be happening in the near future!

Agree! But I will say, a few weeks ago, I got lucky and picked up a few 52T's that were centered for below SMR. This Joe G. was below SMR and I was very happy with the card.

I won't get lucky all the time.

Mike, all I got to say on that gorgeous Joe G. is that you would not have got that card below SMR if I was in the market! Very very nice.
  • Mike, That's a very pretty card. In looking at it, I'm reminded of growing up in the 70's watching NBC's Saturday Game of the Week with Joe in the booth. Congrats on the nice pickup!

Sure....ever since my girlfriend, Britney, has been funding the project.

Mike, Britney is married now (again). At least I think she still is. I'm ashamed of you. I'm surprised you haven't been asked to remove her from your set.
