A bunch of my auctions ended yesterday. Despite my bold type payment terms which includes: As I have a Personal Paypal account, I can only accept non-credit card payments (existing balances or bank acct transfers), someone always manages to pay by credit card.

I deny the payment and follow-up with an email:
As stated in the auction, I can only accept Paypal when funded from a bank account or
Paypal account balance, NOT credit cards. If you cannot fund the payment from a bank account, please mail a check or MO.
Thanks.

And I get this lovely email back:
I will send the payment directly out of my account. BUT rest assured there
will be no more purchases from me in the FUTURE. GET IT! GOOD

I don't think he'll have the opportunity to bid again - BLOCKED!

  • Yes....I make the mistake of not reading auctions as well sometimes and have to get MO's....I don't like it since I like to pay with Paypal, but if it's stated in the auction and I over look it.....I don't try to re-negotiate the terms...I bite the bullet since I have only myself to blame. image

That's a good question. He sent them pretty quickly after I emailed him. Maybe he's upset he won't get a few mileage points for this one.

Barry, can you PM me this person's name so I can block him? Sounds like someone I do not want to deal with either.

    Thanks.

I thought all Paypal accounts could take credit card payments???

  • That said, the buyer is a jerk for sending that email, and I'd block him too, especially when it's spelled out in your auction.

    I start my auctions with:

    I DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL

    in BIG BOLD LETTERS...

Never had a problem after that.

    Cheers,

I sell items sometimes on eBay, but haven't had paypal problems yet. I am curious why you wouldn't take credit card payment through paypal. Do scammers refuse the charges and cheat you out of the already shipped item? or is there a delay period before funds go into your account? Or does paypal take a higher fee out of it?

Just curious and wondering if I should refuse credit cards when I sell too.

When I have a balance in my PayPal account it defaults to using that balance first for payments...haven't seen a way to change that.
  • I think it is pretty clear if you take PayPal or don't take it. It gets confusing for some when you take PayPal only when funded by cash. Some buyers don't understand that you save fees that way so don't pay attention to the instructions.

Paypal offers what they call a Personal account. However, Paypal now limits Personal accounts to accepting funds only from bank account transfers and balances in a Paypal account, not by credit cards (they used to allow credit card transactions up to $1000/mo). For a small-time seller like me, that's all I need. This way I don't get nickel and dimed to death by all Paypal's fees associated with a Business or Premier account.

I understand credit card transactions cost money (I have a credit card merchant account at my workplace), but if I went with one of Paypal's other options, they charge the same percentage for credit cards as they do with cash transactions, which is a pure windfall for them. I choose not to participate in that. If a buyer doesn't like it, they don't have to bid on my auctions. But don't bid on my auction, then complain after the fact that I cannot accept credit cards.

Barry I don't recall what your auctions have in them as far as graphics but I too do not take credit cards for payments because I refuse to upgrade my account.

When you list your item(s), do you select the paypal option, which puts the PP graphics in your listing????? Because these graphics include the credit card logos which give the impression to bidders that you will take PP CC. I NEVER Select paypal as an "option" but merely note it in my description and have never had a problem.

If you aren't doing that, I would suggest that. Edited to add....I went and looked at your closed stuff. You DO have the paypal graphics in there. Try doing what I do and see how that goes.

why not take Credit Cards?? simple....at least for me....I don't want to be charged an additional 3 percent to sell items. It wouldn't be so bad if PP only charged the fee on CC transactions but I believe that they charge it on ALL incoming transactions, no matter where they originate.

Thanks goose3. I didn't realize they charged an additional 3 percent. I wouldn't blame anyone for not accepting it under those terms.

I wouldn't be too upset with the buyer. As goose pointed out, the graphics in your auction leave the "impression" that a buyer can use paypal for payment, and most buyers out there aren't paying attention to the "fine print", so to speak, in regards to no credit cards.

May seem like simple instructions to many on the boards here, but for the occasional Ebay user, it doesn't make sense at first. They see PAYPAL and figure it's all the same, and don't realize that those payments can be funded in different ways.

  • There are sellers who don't take credit cards to save 3% which makes perfect sense. However, if the seller offers Paypal, I thought I could use a credit card. This is very confusing. I'll stick to Heritage I guess, for credit card stuff.

  • Sometimes I fund a purchase through Paypal on my credit card as I keep a small amount in my Paypal verified checking account. ACCOUNTS HAVE BEEN OR CAN BE STOLEN. Some sellers ask for the funds now and I don't have the time to get to the bank.
I just bought a coin from a seller that could only take a credit card through paypal, but not on the phone. I called because I was also interested in another coin he has but he was very short with me about the payment so I didn't ask.

  • Well, despite the 3%, it appears most of the board members who sell on Ebay offer PayPal by credit card. Based on that collective experience, I would assume that means auction prices realized, on average, more than make up for the 3%. I doubt that it means they like giving more fees to Ebay.

Goose - I'll try that next time w/o the Paypal logo. I checked the Paypal box to make it easier for the buyers - that way there's a click button that takes the buyer right to Paypal and fills in all the blanks.

My auctions also CLEARLY state I can't take credit cards through paypal. I had 8 auctions close today and sure enough....1 of them has already sent a credit card payment lol
