Nothing earth shattering, but for me not knowing anything about Shillings, it's a great start, i like it... I been wanting to get into the shillings, and florins, but need to start small and learn my way around, Won it from one of Cameron's auctions tonight so i bought it from someone i trust!!!!
<< <i>Cool Shilling - you know of course the "darkside" has you now! >>
I bought a 1861/16 unc. Maundy from Lloyd awhile back...i have resisted at great lengths...but i love some of these darkside coins, i have to be careful though, i know Morgans, but these are new to me...i have alot of learning to do...BUT IT IS GONNA BE FUN!!!!!
I know you are a lightsider, so to make you feel more at home I'll say "YOU SUCK!" >>
Thank you Aethelred!!!!!!! I am sure after all of my stupid questions you will still feel the same!!! >>
As long as you don't mind stupid answers we'll get along just fine! >>
I doubt that anyone will get a stupid answer on here...i have noticed everyone will give an answer based on their best judgement and EVERYONE is very honest when they don't know and gives a very complimentary opinion and defers to and recommends their fellow members to answer.....

The Shilling (then called a Testoon) was first issued during the reign of King Henry VII, it was a silver coin about the size of a Half Dollar with a value of 12 Pennies. It was last issued with a date of 1970. To me it is very sad that the British no longer use this coin!

Thanks Dude!!! I have found that i like the Shillings up until 1901 with the Queens portrait the most...The designs are absolutely fantastic, and so are the Florins!!! I especially like the "young" portraits with the "lace" at the bust...guess i am kinda weird but the detail is exceptional!!!!
Very nice shilling, WL I have smoe British halfpennies, but don't know about anything about the shillings. If you ever decide to get into Canadian coins, I've been collecting them for about 4 years and have a Charleton guide about them, if I can be of any help to you

Thanks Susan!!! I am gonna have to leave the Canadian coins to the wifey though... She is the Canadian collector..that's why i have to find smoething else to collect!!!
Interestingly enough, most dealers don't seem to distinguish the two varieties, even when it comes to price. Even if you had the scarcer one, it wouldn't be worth more in most cases. Just a point of discussion, mainly.

The new Spink doesn't even list the regular "8". Krause has 'em both, though.
Many years ago, before i went sixpence mad, i used to collect shillings.
Indeed one of my first coins was an 1887 shilling that i got from my father, having a 102/3 year old coin was something amazing to me back then. Careful Victorian Jubilee issues can be addictive.
I know i once put together an 1887 year set, half svereign to threepence, okay i never managed to get the sovereign. I eventually sold them all off when i moved wholesale into the 17th/18th centuries.

<< <i>Here is a Shilling that was minted in 1582-1583:
OOOHHHHH.....NOW you SUCK!!!!!
That coin has character!!!!! MAN...That is SWEET!!!!
<< <i>Nice shilling. You will find that last 8 in the date is struck over a 7, in all likelihood. >>
<< <i>The "8 over 7" variety in this case is more common than the standard "8." >>

I can't understand that. I have one, albeit in filler grade.
