Personalized checklists

How does everyone here make up their own checklist of cards to buy?

For set collectors, I'd imagine it's fairly simple -- there's 400 cards in this set, I need #1 - 400. image

I collect a single player, and I've used the beckett.com site for that, which seems pretty complete. Are there people here who've found it missing certain things?

I also collect team sets, and I have used the Charlton guide for that one, with help from the card manufacturer's websites as well. Helps to know the names of every player on the team for that season, of course. image

I figured I'd turn to the vets on the board to see if they have some nuggets of wisdom that could help me find any holes in my lists!

Cheers,

Mike

I, too, collect a single player (Wade Boggs)...my primary interest is finishing his basic set in PSA, and working on the master set in non-graded form.

Team collections are really tough, as there are just sooo many cards produced now. I have collected every Tampa Bay Buc mainstream card (i.e. non-regional) release from 1976-1995, but even then it's gotten very pricy to do, with so many cards.

The set I've been working on and imagine will be for some time is my 1971 topps baseball set...a set of this size just can't be put together fast without spending tons of cash.

As far as others...if you have some other interests, I'd definitely go for what you like. I've recently rediscovered the 1981 fleer baseball set, as it (with topps and donruss of that year) was the first set I really assembled (I was 10)...all the errors, the different card stock than the topps, made it a much different experience. The trick (I've found) is not let your interests wonder all over the place...take a look at what you really want and mark it down, and stick with it. For a large set (like my '71), game plan how you want to tackle it (I've decided to go the stars route first, then work down the commons).

    Good luck to you!

I'm lucky in a lot of ways, in that I collect CFL football cards for the Edmonton Eskimos -- There's been only one card maker since 1981 (Jogo), although Pacific got into the mix for 2003 and 04. Before that there were Topps/OPC and a few others (including the '56 Parkies set, which I'd love to get, obviously!). As my sig line says, I also only collect OPC brand Edmonton Oiler hockey cards, so that's manageable as well (and finished, once I get an authentic Gretzky rookie).

    Same to you!

I've pretty much picked up all the commons from '83 to present, with the exception of the '83 Warren Moon rookie, so now it's tackling the common stuff (58, 60 - 65 Topps CFL, 68 OPC CFL). I just won two Blue Ribbon Tea cards on eBay last night (at about 30% of book), so obviously I'll deviate from the common stuff if something really rare and cheap comes up <grin>

Cheers, and thanks for the feedback

I don't have a membership or subscription to Beckett, but when I had access to their priceguides briefly, I was able to take a look at the priceguides for individual players. They seemed to be pretty comprehensive to me. The only thing they don't list are the unofficial sets like the Broders cards from the 80's-90's. They display the entire checklist/priceguide on a single player onto one .html page when queried. This made it easy for me to simply port the page into an .xls file to use as a checklist. It's very handy and convenient.

    Mike,
Speaking of Edmonton Eskimos cards, do you happen to have any cards of:

    Marcus Crandell
    Kevin Ingram
    Danny Kepley
    Henry Williams

that you would be willing to sell?

    Just curious,
    James
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

You don't need a subscription to get the checklists. You get their complete list of cards for that player (or cards in a particular set, for instance), just no prices. I used it to get my Chris Osgood list, and found quite a few regional sets for my Eskimo cards in their lists. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the only real checklist I've found, so I wasn't sure how complete they were.

    Cheers!

I don't believe I have any doubles of those players, however I got all mine from a seller on eBay, who sells singles, named Steve Rimbault. You can find his store on eBay under the user name rimbault. He should be able to set you up with everything you need! Let 'im know I sent ya! image

Yeah, you're right. I was confusing the checklists with the pricelists. You can still get a listing of your favorite player, but you can't get the prices listed on the same page (you have click on an individual link for each card). I suppose the book value prices are irrelevant these days anyway.

Thanks for the recommendation Mike! I have sent an eBay email to Mr. Rimbault.

  • Another great way, if you don't mind keeping a binder, is the spreadsheets from JEB. He formats them perfectly to keep track of everything. I use them for my raw sets as well. If he hasn't done who you collect, just ask him. He's great.

True enough. eBay has truly made "book value" a very shaky word. Value came from supply vs. demand. With so much supply now available on the 'Bay (I've seen 5 or 6 of the same "rare" cards for auction at the same time. Makes for lower final prices!), modern at least has dropped off significantly. I've even seen someone here sell a Gretzky OPC rookie PSA 8 for a fraction of what it would be worth raw in EXMT!

Cool; I emailed him as well to let him know people from here may be dropping him a line. He usually advertises in the Canadian Sports Collector magazine as well, and has made a decent amount of money off of ME anyway <lol>

  • I collect Angels Team sets and here is what I did.

I use the following website: Teamsets4U to get a basic listing of all the Angels cards. From there, I tweaked it using cards I came across on eBay or the card manufactuers websites.

Very cool! Of course, he doesn't have anything I can use, since there are probably more people on this board who collect Golf cards than CFL football cards <grin>. That and Hockey, which seems to be fourth in the big four sports when it comes to collecting!

I've got my own Excel set up, but I'm gonna steal a few ideas from him and incorporate 'em into mine! image

    thanks for the link!

Wow, you baseball card guys are very lucky to have this kind of resource! I picked up an Edmonton Oilers checklist book from my local card shop yesterday (you can find it at www.rookiecard.ca/checklists.htm), but it's from 2000, so it's a bit out of date, and of course is missing quite a bit. Still, it's a decent starting point, and found 3 cards I didn't know I needed. image

  • Mike-do you know how the 1983 Jogo's were distributed? My dad has a complete set (with an excellent looking Moon), and the bottom card is stamped 199/500, which leads me to believe that they were complete factory sets. Also, do you know if the cards had a strict print run of 500 which I have heard?

Good luck on your set-I know how hard it can be to get that Moon.

From what I've read, the number was anywhere from 500-800 sets produced that year. They are only ever distributed in sets -- although they experimented with packs in '91 and '92 (and produced 30,000 sets, I've heard). The players apparently pay a small amount and get 200-300 copies of their own card as well as the 500 produced. I've heard a rumour from a few different distributors that Moon's card was triple printed, although only the ones in the set were numbered out of 500. Haven't seen real confirmation from the company tho.

You can check out Jogo's site (including all the checklists) here.

Thanks a lot. By the way, my set only has the single card with the number stamped on it-is this normal?

yup; each set only had the one card stamped, since they weren't shipped out individually; just in the set. Many other CFL sets were the same way (1981 Red Rooster sets, for instance).
